I just bought a rebuilt starter w/clutch for my 9n at my local parts store. The price wasnt too bad, I paid $99.00 inc the starter drive. I was having problems stating the other day and decided to pull the starter to see if I could see what was wrong. I noticed a brass bushing had come out from the housing towards the starter drive. After sliding it back into the housing it started fine again (one time) it still starts but doesnt sound right. Could this have happened due to something in my tractor being old and worn or is it just a rebuilt part which has failed on its own. I have already returned one other, Im sure the parts guy is going to be over it. I just want to be able to go in knowing what I am talking about. Or is there a way I can safely do the repair myself so I dont have to hassle with all that?

Patrick,
Take the starter back and get another one. The drive end housing where the bushing sits is probably shot and not holding it anymore. jstpa

Yep. It"s a defective starter. Take it back. Many times parts houses buy cheap overhauled units because they make more markup with them. If you try to fix it yourself, and it later fails they"ll claim you performed unauthorized alterations on it.
