Helping my neighbor with his "54 gas 800. Valve job, new wiring harness, cables, battery, carb., overhauled the distributor, new coil, cap, rotor, plugs and plug wires. Replaced condensor twice. Engine starts right up and runs strong for a while, but then suddenly dies as if the ignition was switched off. Gas tank was removed, cleaned, new fuel line and shutoff installed. Could it be a string of bad condensors?
Using NAPA now. Had some trouble with my "48 Ford V-8 due to condensor made in Argentina. Replaced with NAPA, runs good.

This sounds like the annoying and all to common ignition switch problem. Had the same problem on my 55 860 and even though an EE it took a while to isolate it because it would test OK with the engine not running. Ignition switches are notorious trouble makers on the hundred series tractors. Very unlikely that the condenser is the problem.

Ignintion switches do not cost much for these tractors and are available at most good farm supply stores as well as NH. I expect that your problem will go away if you replace yours.

Sam..... ..as a general rule, bad condensers manifest themselves in the 1st minute of running and the engine starts missing and backfiring and quits. Will restart after about 1hr of cool-off time.

As a general rule, yer carb has about 5min of fuel before the engine starts missing and backfiring and quits. Clogged fuel filters will still dribble gas into the carb and fill the bowl up innna'bout 15min. Your tractor should have 3-filters. Secret one hidden upinside the gastank and "melts". Replacement is by complete replacement of glass fuelbowl valve. Then there is the finefilter ontoppa the glassbowl. That should be intuitive obvious. Then there is the 3rd filter hidden inside the carb elbow. Do I haffta tell ya what to do?

But heres the deal, SUDDEN engine stops are ELECTRICAL. Ford ignition switches are NOT as robust as we'd like'm to be after 50yrs. And is the most obvious suspect in your reported problem..... ....respectfully, Dell

If I suspected condensors.. I'd also look for burned points.

My first guess however is fuel flow. ( or no fuel flow.. like a clogged / stuck float.. that fills the carb bowl slowly.. then the tractor starts.. and the carb bowl empties and the tractor dies..)

Could also be clogged filters.

You did replace your ignition switch right?
