I'm searching the archives, but anyone have clear directions to remove, replace, and gap points? Do I use the same "gapper" I use for sparkies? Is replacing the condensor just takin' it out and puttin' it back in?

Thanks everyone ...

Two weeks ago, these guys here convinced me to do my points, (never did one in my life, i usually fill em up, and have em towed). Had to pull the distrib off 4 times to double check everything. Now she fires on the first push of the start button, purrs like a kitten. It was the best thing so far I did to the ol girl. email me if you want additonal notes of what I did. These guys are the best.

Greenhorn..... ..... CAUTION: frontmount distributor points gap is 0.015" and sidemount distributor points gap is 0.025. BIGG DIFFERENCE!!!

CAUTION: points gap feeler gauge is usually flat-metal and must be SQUEEKY-KLEEN (no finger/engine oils to transfer to the points surfaces to cause burned points and weak sparkies)

CAUTION: sparkie gap is best checked/measured with ROUND-WIRE gauge = 0.025" gap..... ...Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

The TSC distributor tune-up kit comes with a points gauge.. A multimeter is all but necessary to check your work.

I have some clear pics of the distributor guts, if you'd like them.

Pic One From left to right: distributor cap, distributor, coil. At bottom is a typical tune-up kit, with new points and condenser and gauge.

Pic Two This is the inside of a front mount distributor. The points are closed in this shot.

Pic Three Here's your condenser. It's the silver barrel on top; you can see the mounting screw and the wire that comes out of it (also held down by a single screw).

Pic Four This is the tang used to set your timing. See the N-Series website for simple directions.

If your distributor is side-mount, why then I reckon I've wasted my time here..

Well, it's better to use a feeler guage ($7 at any auto parts store) but it's basically the same routine. Condensor is two screws...one holds the wire, one holds the little metal can. Pop it out, pop the new one back in and make sure the wire isn't grounded anywhere. That is, make sure the insulator is in good shape and not cracked or worn through.
