9N hesitation

While plowing snow with my 41 9N as the resistance increases and the governor should open the throttle for more power, it will start to and often die. It always restarts OK but when it has to labor again the problem reoccures. Pulling off the gas line from the carb produces a steady stream. I have an inline glass purilator filter with a replaceable element. When the gas line is rehooked the gas will just barely enter the element and it never fills up. Even when the tractor is running the filter never seems to have any gas in it. What do you think? Should I try running without the filter and see what happens or any other suggestions.

Hi Russ. Try the easy stuff first such as giving it a very little more gas by turning the carb adjustment out about 1\8 of a turn. If it improves but not much turn it out a little more. I found last summer with an 2nd. 9N that I just got that a little richer mixture did the trick. Also the linkage to the governor was binding just a little. Lubed and worked it up and that along with a richer mixture worked. I have the same type of filter and as long as it is getting a fair amount of gas it is OK. The filter on mine was cut into the pipe so it laid horizontal and I bent it a little down after the outlet of the filter and that got it running better. That was also part of the problem. The tractor was the right price so I expected some problems and these were solved in a few minutes. It still hesitates somewhat when going under load, but that is the governor whick will be rebuilt next summer Good luck. Ron

Check your governor by pushing on the linkage between the carb and gov. You should feel it trying to push back if it's working. HTH

On second thought...try removing the plug from the bottom of the carb bowl and chacking the fuel flow at that point. That is the easiest thing to check and is a good place to start.

Have you noted any smoke or anything that might look like it is flooding? Not really enough information to answer as to what the problem is. Problem could be restricted breather, govenor problem, carb issue or even an ignition issue. Is there anything else you can tell us as far as symptoms or observations?

Russ..... ..when yer filter fills up, its CLOGGED. Good filters present NO RESISTANCE to fluid flow.

Howsomevers, iff'n it bothers you, putta "S" bend in yer fuel line where the filter is mounted in the up-hill middle of the "S-bend" and yer fillter will ALWAYS be full..... .....Dell

My filter does the same thing. Does not cause me a problem. I can run accross the field wide open throttle and watch the gas dribble through the filter. You have other problems causing your hesitation.

try taking that element out and see if it'll fill up, all of your other filters on your 9n are screen and it might not want to go through a paper filter sinci it doesn't have a fuel pump to push it through!!!!!
