Though I'ma dim bulb, when I do something, I try to do it as well as possible. When I replace my points and condensor, can I remove my distributor and kind of clean it up and so forth, or is there a chance I'll screw something up?

if its a crabcap take it if and clean the outside with areosol brake cleaner and dry down with compressed air, then work on it CLEAN

if its sidemount use brake cleaner while its on the tractor and don't take it off unless you want to open up that can of worms

Do you have a front mount or a side mout distributor?

If it is a front mount, it is highly recommended to pull it to replace the points - it only takes removing two bolts. When you put it back in don't forget the gasket in between the distributor and the engine block (I do that almost every time). Then, thread both bolts into the holes a few turns, lightly press the distributor to the engine, then turn the rotor until the distributor drops into place on the cam. It will only go on one way easily, so you don't have to worry about timing issues - remember, Ford made it so farmers could work on it. Hold the distributor to the block and finger tighten the two bolts all the way down.

If you have a side mount distributor, I would not pull it to replace the points unless you know you are having timing issues and may need to rotate the distributor gear a tooth.

Good luck,
Dan

Dan,
If I am reading this correctly you are saying it will only fit in there one way? So if I pull it out all I have to do is turn the rotor till it drops back in and then tighten up the bolt's.
Thanks, Joe

That is exactly correct. The cam on the engine side and the tang on the back of the distributor is offset slightly, so it can only go back on one way - unless you force it. There have been several tangs broken because people trying to force it. That is why I say just lightly press it against the engine block and when the tang/cam line up it will just drop into place next to the engine block.

I had mine off yesterday, to put in an electronic ignition, and there is no problem at all. The distributor is attached by two bolts and comes right off for easy work on the bench. The only thing to watch out for is to replace the rotor pointing in the same direction it was pointing when you took it off. Good luck. P.S. (the Pertronix ignition is great; no more babying required to start her up!)
