New plugs, rebuilt carb, new coil, points, condensor in side mount 6-volt. I have gas and spark, no fire. With air cleaner off and with a shot of starter fluid- nothing. Where do I start to track this problem down? It failed to start after I changed the oil (and put too much in). Now have correct amount of oil. This morning I got it to run for about 10 seconds. Now it just turns over. I ain't givin' up, but I'm gettin' peeved. I don't kick the dog or throw my tools- but I need help.

If you have "gas, spark, and air" something ought to blow up. Either it ought to run or at least fire out the exhaust or carb. Accordingly, it appears either you don't have enough of one or the other. If it won't make noise on starting ether I would bet on spark.

Do you have a good 3/16 inch of blue white spark that you can hear crack when it fires. If it is yellow or whimpy look for electrical issues like a wet distributor or points set wrong or oily--you did use a good clean feeler gauge when you changed the points, right? Should be .025 on the high spot on the cam on a side mount. If you have a multi meter what does it read at the coil and does the reading change at the hot coil terminal as you crank it?

Do you have a solid stream of gas out of the drain on the bottom of the float bowl? If you just have a flow to the carb that isn't telling you what you need to know. I won't buy rebuilt carbs any more cause I wind up rebuilding the rebuilts. If you don't have a constant good stream out that drain look at filters and needle and seat.

Can't imagine an oil change causing it not to run. Did you perchance pressure wash it at the same time?

Anyhow, if it ran before you can make it run some more. Your mileage may vary

make sure you getting AIR, I know this sounds elementry, but I had a lawn mower not run correctly because it wasnt getting enough air. Even after I cleaned the air filter, it still wouldnt run correctly with the old filter. After installing a new air filter it cleared right up! :) if this doesnt work, then make sure you have the points set correctly, and make sure your petcock is open from your tank to your carb.

First off - if you plan on owning a N Series tractor, learn to throw tools and kick dogs... Just kidding of course.

If you are sure you are getting spark, and it won't start with starting fluid, I would be inclined to agree with Tom that your spark plugs are in the incorrect order (it goes 1, 2, 4, 3 in a counter clockwise rotation). Did you change all of this stuff before or after the oil overfill?

Greenie..... ....10 seconds is just about as long as an engine will run onnnna shot of ether quick-start. And iff'n the quick spin of the engine don't suck'm-up gasoline from the carb and keeper runnin' ya gottz other problems.

Yer report of "over-filling" on yer engine oil change, makes me think you've gott stuck ring problems and consequently LOW compression and NO SUCK. And while yer reported "re-build" of yer carb can be suspect (clogged jets comes to mind) I think it is TIME to do the DREADED COMPRESSION test. This will tell iff'n you gotts stuck rings from oil over-fill and low compression. Ford specs: 90psi min (dry), 5-puffs min. Writter down. Iff'n low, do a "wet" test by squirting about 1-oz of oil down the sparkie hole and do the test all-over'gain. Writter-down. Iff'n compression comes up, ya gottz bad/stuck rings. Iff'n compression don't come up, ya gotts bad/burned/stuck valves.

If your still 6 volt positive ground run a wire from the battery neg ative post to the coil on the side oposite from the wire that feeds the distributor, this bypasses all of the components in your electrical system and puts power right at the coil, you dont need the key on or any thing else other then the starter button, post back and let us know what happens.

If it ain"t firing off with a shot of ether you ain"t got enough or no spark. If it fires on ether then you ain"t getting any fuel. Bypass the ignition switch, see if that helps. Been alot of talk on the forum before about the switch going bad. It sounds like spark, could be ign. timing, could also be valve timing. Check it all just like you would when you were putting it together fur the first time.

Are the spark plugs getting wet with gas? Do you have a fat spark at the plug boot? The rule with mechanically sound gas motors is, if you have gas and spark it will run.

Get out the VOM and start running down the electrical. Earlier posts should have all the info needed. If not ask or somebody will post 'em. HTH

Do you have any sign that the fuel is really making it to the cylinders? When it ran for 10 seconds, was that because you were spraying the starter fluid in the carb? I also meant to ask if this is a front mount distributor?

I agree with the others on this thread: check your starter switch.. Heck, you might as well put a new one in, that way it'll match all the other new parts on your machine. Good Luck!
