I am 'prettying up' my 8N - didn't think an engine rebuild was required and everything works well except the governor (that's a Minnesota thing). As long as I have the sheet metal off I did a compression check while it was easy - numbers are dry then wet. #1 was 90/100, #2 was 90/100, #3 was 90/110,#4 was 100/100. I'm still thinking that though I have some ring wear I could probably go many years at 200 hours a year before I'd need rebuild. I have an 850 to do any serious work around the place so the 8N won't break a sweat too often. There is just this little voice that says: 'it will never be this easy to throw a kit at it again'. Would I be wasting money on a rebuild kit??

Thanx - I was pretty sure I wasn't in need of the rebuild, but once I put this back together I don't want to be taking it apart again a few years down the road. I know 90 is a bit on the low side of okay but don't have the experience to know how fast 90 turns to 80 with regular maintenance.(Really Tim the motive is laziness) I'll just stop the leaks, fix the governor, do a preventive replace on the kingpin bushing and call the front part good.

Hey guys, you're not reading between the lines and, instead, being too technically correct. What I see is bj just itching to rebuild that N and tear into that engine. All of us-uns have done things to the N that really don't need it, just because we like to. I say "yeah, go for it". My $.02

Paul..... .it'd be eazier to throw the sheetmetal back on (grin). And unless ya' gotts lotta spare time and cash and ya' got this overwhelming itch, why??? While the're not serious "braggin" numbers, the're respectical and unless ya' got other serious issues, my vote would be to write the numbers up on the wall over the tractor and go out and tractor somemore..... ..Dell
