Off topic but it does relate to old tools anyway. Some time ago, after my wife"s dad died, we got some of his tools, nothing fancy, some spoke shaves, couple of planes, etc. She picked up a hammer that I would call a tack hammer, small, original handle etc . One of her guys at work today mentioned that it was old. So I used an eraser on the head and found this word, Tornwell. Did an Internet search for it and got nothing. The hammer head is apx 2 3/8 in long, round head like finish hammer , and ball peen round end on the other side. Over all length is only 9 5/8 inches,, weights all most nothing.

Got any ideas what it is or who made it? I did google it and found nothing..

Thanks guys!!

i believe tymoc is right on the use of the hammer, is there any chance that the "t" could be a "c"? cornwell was or maybe still is a maker of very good quality tools, i havent seen any new cornwell tools in this part of the country, but old mechanic's tool boxes are full of them, ericlb

It sounds like you have an engravers "chasing" hammer. It was used to tap, tap, tap the graver along when cutting the lines in the metal. The handle below the head should be on the slim side to allow the head to whip some to smack the graver with very little hand movement. Sounds like thats what it is. Still made today. Never owned one but made a few whenever I engraved patchboxes etc on flintlocks. Never got real good at it but looked as good as the old rifles that were plain folks guns.

My Dad (84) still has his great-granddad's graving hammer. (One of the few things the thieves didn't think worth-while I guess.) It's for all the world like a miniature ball pein hammer. No mfr marking whatever on it that I recall.
