When I park the 8N I shut the gas off under the tank and then turn the key off, there is still gas in the glass bowl and line.

By shuting the gas off at the tank is that keeping the pressure off the gravity fed system which keeps pressure off the carb/float?...so that it doesn"t leak?

Thanks.

Not just "keeping pressure off" the float. Iffn the float IS leaking you don't loose all yur gas onto the ground or even worse into your engine. Iffn you fill up one of your cylinders with gas you could cause major $$$$ damage to your engine because of the hydraulic lock when you try to start the engine. (Gasoline is not very compressable).

But... it's an updraft carb. Can that much gas get up out of the carb and into the cylanders?

There is a bronze or felt filter in the bottom or the carburetor or air horn designed to allow fuel to drip out onto the ground if the float/valve does not shut off. Originally this worked pretty well to prevent filling the cylinders with gasoline and the resulting hydrostatic lock caused by a sticking float. However, after 50+ years, these "overflows" are often clogged and will not allow excess gasoline to escape. If so, and the air filter hose is good and tightly connected, fuel can indeed flow into the cylinders.

If you have a nice & tight breather hose connection (which you should) gas can get in the cylinders; remember, the tank is higher than the engine.

True, I guess I thought that there would be an overflow to let it out of the carb and onto the ground.

BTW I am real new to the Ford tractors.

It does have an overflow.
After 50 or 60 years it tends to get clogged up.
