Hey Guys,
Ive been having trouble with cold starts with my 47 8N. I"ve replaceed the choke plate and shaft, cleaned and put kit in Marvel carb and cleaned all 3 fuel filters. I"ve replaced the spark plugs with Champion 844-H10C Copper Plus plugs and now she fires off on 2nd turnover even in cool damp weather. Question is, is the heat range of plug too hot?

Dumb Question in reply to Charley7747, 03-04-2005 07:45:06
Why would the heat range of the plug affect how the engine starts? I am assuming the heat range means how hot the plug will get in a running engine. When it starts, they are all cold.

Joe

Joe..... ...yer right, ALL SPARKIES ARE COLD AT START-UP ...BUT... sparkie heatrange control the natural combustion by-products of the LAST-TIME the engine ran and deposited on the sparkies. Fouled sparkies are hard to start due to the deposits.

Too hot a heatrange will cause premature combustion and can melt the tops of the piston. Its called "ping". High octaine gasoline reduces ping sensitivity. Too early ignition timing can cause ping. Too high compression for the gasoline octaine rating causes ping. ...BUT... too cold a sparkie causes deposits which also cause missing while running.

Don't miss-confuse ignition HOT-Sparkies (the ability to jump the gap) with engine HOT-Sparkies (the ablility to control the PHYSICAL temperature of the sparkplug by heat conduction into the cylinderhead waterjacket)..... ....Dell, yur self-appointed sparkie-meister

Charlie..... ..while the 1939 N-Engine was designed to use the common Champion H-10 sparkie. Modern no-lead gasoline seems to need a hotter range sparkie like the H-12. Most N-users find the AutoLite AL-437 to be a "better" sparkie over the H-12. Gap = 0.025..... ....Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

H-10 is the recommended Champion plug. Lots of guys are using the "hotter" H-12's with no problems.
