Today I bought OEM adjustible lifters for my 48N. My N mechanic swears this is Wear the tapping noise is coming from on my tractor. The old lifters were non adjustible so I made The trip to tulsa so I could have them today
and maybe have this problem narrowed down by tomorrow. I got to see him pull one of the lifters out of my tractor befor I went home and the old one looked brand new and the cam was in great shape also. I dont think this is my problem!

Anyway my question is do I need any other parts to install these adjustible lifters? In the book I noticed a cap over the end of the valve rod. Mine does not have this and the mechanic said I dont need them for mine I'm not so sure so I thought I would ask the real experts.

Did you note excessive slack between the lifter and valve stem before removal (should be VERY little Intake valve clearance= 0.010 to 0.012 inch Exhaust 0.014 to 0.106 inch cold. The cups are to allow for valve rotation during operation and not all valve models need them to enable rotation. Since your N is pre 51, your orriginal tappets are non adjustable. If you are replacing the lifters with the adjustable type, it is recommended that you use the kit to do so, that will include those caps with new exhaust valves. Don't use any new lifters if you got em, you may be able to return them or exchange them for the kit if needed, which will be much more expensive( I hope you don't need them). I would also stess that it is MUCH cheaper to inspect and identify the real culpret here, than to start buying things you may not need. I wouldn't buy anything until I found the cause. You should be able to determine excessive valve clearances with a feeler gauge without removing anything else. The loose cylinder sleeve is a thought, but I was thinking that you hear the noise with a dead cold engine and your compression looks good, or did I assume too much?

Adjustable lifters are almost a MUST.Saves lots of time on adjusting valves. You did right by buying them.FREE ROTATING VALVES....that's another story and has nothing to do with adjustable lifters. don b

I really wish I could be there to help out...believe me, I have been down these roads before. By the way...if your intake valves had 0.014, that was too loose by 0.002 on the intake side...ok for exhaust. I wish you luck friend. post back and let us know how it goes.

No you did not assume to much, You can hear it cold turning it over. And I agree with you about finding the real culpret. I should have not let this guy convince me of anything yet. He has been working on tractors for years so I thought I would give him a chance. We will find out hear in about 4 hours.
Its to late to take the lifters back 6 of 8 are in already. The only thing I noticed about the old one's compared to the new one's is the old one's were half the weight of the new. Dont know if it means much? Any chance you are on your way to Oklahoma today. HA HA

Remember the cam turns only 1/2 as fast as the crank, so the lifter noise isnt on every stroke. Also at slow idle when the cam lobe passes under the valve the lifter pushes ahead on the cam, any slack in the cam gears can make a noise. Have you checked to see if one of the sleeves could be loose when it warms up, I"ve had them do that.
Good Luck
John

Your not the first to say that and if this doesnt
fix it the cam is next. If you will look further down on this page or mabey the second page at my posting "Lifter noise yes/no????? " it will explain all the noises a little better. thanks for your help.

Roughy,
Your mech is right. You don"t need the caps unless you plan on putting the rotating exhaust valves in.

I thought my lifters were noisy but it turned out I had a hidden crack in my exhaust manifold

Your right about that because that was my first problem. I fixed the gasket and then I could hear the lifters or whatever this noise is. Thanks
