I may be mistaken, but I think i'm right and if i am, you may not like this.

I went back through my pictures of my 2N restoration (engines are the same for the most part). I'm pretty sure that there are 2 bolts that hold the oil pan on along the front edge of the engine that go up into the timing cover. You MAY have to remove the front axle to get to those two bolts. However, I think that since there is a big cutout or drain opening in the bottom center of the axle support where it bolts to the oil pan - you may be able to get to the two "hidden" bolts by using a LOOONG extension and possibly a universal or wobble socket. I beleive these are your culprits.

Also, before you remove the cover, remove the oil releif spring and plunger (under the BIIIG hex head plug at the top of the timing cover) and put them in a safe place so they don't get lost or damaged. If you run into any more problems, let us know.

Went up thru the drain and got them. Takes a 12 inch extension and a knuckle on your ratchet and these two bolts are 1/2 not 9/16 like the rest. THANKS A MILLION

I found the other bolts . Had to go up from drain hole in bottom of crank pully cover. I drove all the way to tulsa and bought new adjustible tappets yesterday and low and behold ,that didn't fix it. So I decided to do what Jimmy D and Zane told me to do and check the cam gear. I just now got the cover off and the gear is bouncing around. I think this is it. I'm going to put a new post now to see if Zane or Jimmy is watching If you dont mind read the details on it and see what you think

Just out of curiosity. When you removed the timing cover, did a funny sheet metal washer looking thing with four little nubs fall out with it? This should be in there. It may be attached to the cam gear so check. This is really a "thrust washer" that pushes agains the cam gear and the timing cover to keep the gear pressed up against the engine side of the cover and prevents the very thing you describe as "bouncing around". However, if you see obvious signs of damage to the gear, better to pull and replace or inspect.

There is no washer as matter of fact it is rubbing the cover in the middle. I have pictures but I dont know how to get them on the forum fast enough

Here's a pic of one from John Smith's site. I didn't know this, but he says that this is only used on models with front mount distributors. I've heard that technically you don't need it since the angle of the teeth on the gear and the rotation of the engine actually makes the gear want to slide TOWARDS the engine. However, I am a firm beleiver that if it was originally called for, then I want it in there! I was able to get mine from a salvage yard (after a lot of looking) and I think they gave it to me since I bought a few other parts at the same time.
