Ok I put in the adjustible lifters and it did not fix the noise, so I did like Jimmyy D and Zane told me to and striped the front of the tractor to check the cam gear. There is defanitly somthing strange hear!! It is A fiber gear with a aluminum center it has four bolts holding it on. it has ben rubbing the hole on the cover more on the top than bottom. When I turn over the engine my noise is louder now and the gear bounces around.I put a mark on the fiber gear and then one on the aluminum center strait across from one another and the hit the starter. The marks will somtimes be approx 1 centimeter apart when the engine stops turning. I have pictures I can e-mail but I cant get them on the forum.(don't know how) OH and if I put a ratchet on the gear bolt and turn it up and then down I can see and hear the gear or cam pop.

Your cam gear should be a 4 bolt on gear, not pressed on.I would suggest the aluminum gear, not the fiber gear.Sounds like someone installed the Tisco fiber gear and they just don't work because they ain't made right.Probably wore a hole in the timing cover and if so, it will have to be repaired or replaced. don b

Stop<<<<>>and I do mean stop . That gear must be tight in every way as it effects the timing. Get a new gear and install it. Go to central Tractor TSC they have a good supply of 8n stuff.. Good luck.. Don,t run the thing..

Rough:
Had the same problem w/my 48N. Was very noisy when I bought it. Thinking lifters and or bearings I broke it down. Replaced main / rod bearings, ground valves, and cleaned everything up (it needed these anyways). Re-assembled the engine on the stand (minus pan) and turned it over with a breaker bar. I was amazed to hear a loud clack with every rotation. I thought to myself that would be the noise I heard before with the engine running. It was excessive gear lash between cam gear and oil pump gear. Replaced both and no more noise. Sounds like you have the same problem. End play would account for your rubbing wear but would not cause the noise you describe. Good luck!

Whent back outside and decided to try and remove the cam gear. Took out the 4 bolts and it fell off in my hand. I would have thought it would be slid up on a shaft or something but the only thing holding it in the center was the 4 bolts. Anyway the center hub on the gear will rotate on the gear about a centimeter with very little effort and it will wobble side to side a little.
You talk about a cheap looking peice of crap.I think this is my noise but I could be wrong. What does everyone else think. I also grabed the end of the cam and tried to wiggle it and could not, also after this is over I will have to figure out how to get it all back in time.

I think you need a cam gear. the gear only bolts to the cam in one position if you have not turned the cam or crank reinstall the gear and then index it.

What are friends for?

Yer gear is bad On a 48 it should bolt on. I Was at a scrap yard and spoted a N oil pan stick'n up from a pile of scrap, dug it out and it was bolted to a complete engine all I found wrong with the engine was the fiber gear like you have was loose on the alumiun hub the engine was in Great condition

The fiber gear should not be loose. You can get a replacement gear, but they are pressed on. One place shows about $50. I just bought a 52 8n, which has a little noise, I thought was a lifter, now im not sure. BTW I'm East of Norman Okla.
Good Luck
John

The book says to use a pully to remove the gear.
Will it have to be pressed back on ?

Are you saying the fiber gear is loose on the aluminum hub, or that the cam is moving fore and aft due to the lack of the "thrust washer" in the front cover?

FO-4 states that there should be no more than .004" of camshaft endplay, and that excessive camshaft endplay can be corrected by using a thinner front cover gasker, or replacing the front cover, if it's worn.

I guess my answer would have to be "Both". The gear does move around on the aluminum center because I put the marks on them and hit the starter they were in different places when it stoped. Hit the starter again and they were lined up again?? If it needs a washer it does not have one and it has been rubbing the cover. Hope I didn't confuse you.

Replace the bad gear, replace the timing cover, and cehck camshaft endplay per the FO-4.

Rough, AS far as I remember the cam has little or limited end play (to the order of< .004 ) This
being the case, I can't think your noise is re-
lated to the cam unless it has to do with valve clearence. Are your valves correctly adjusted?
Your manual should expain that for every 120 degrees of rotation, certain valves should be adjusted for proper clearence whether intake or
exhaust. When you rotate your engine take the time to do it SlOOOOOly. When you hear the noise
'backup, think, observe and if necessary employ a
helper. It appears that your noise is obvious at
low RPM (Rotation by mechanical means while not
running), which is desirable. READ your manual,
understand it and TAKE YOUR TIME!!
