What to do with a Jubilee

My father in-law has a Golden Jubilee and he does not use it much anymore but I was wanting to use it for putting in some deer food plots. However, the 3 point hitch won"t lift for long before it starts dropping down (leaking off I guess). Anyway some mechanic told him it was not worth messing with. The engine and the rest of the tractors works fine. I think it is worth fixing but I sure don"t know. Should we sell it, Fix it, or what do you think. I am pretty handy but never worked on a tractor. I had rather take it to someone and let them fix it. We live in the UP or Michigan

Thanks Bart

Ok,

Here is a little more information on what might the problem. My Father in-law says when you start the tractor it has to idel for a while before the lift will come up. But then once you get it up it won't hold its position. It will lift the blade but then it will start falling down. You can lift it right back up right away but it will just fall down again but slowly, not fast. So what do you think?

Thanks, Bart

As others have said, it is worth in the neighborhood of $3,000 more or less depending on condition of other things like tires, etc. The lift problem could be as simple as a $25 safety valve. Get it to a reputable tractor mechanic who knows what he is doing and is HONEST. Or get the manuals and do it yourself, but don't give it away.

Ok, Well Thanks for all the responses.

Sounds like it could be fixed. I think I know how this starts. I get sucked into the black hole of rebuilding a tractor. First off, is this a disease, and it sounds like you guys have it and are trying to give it too me.....

Kidding aside, Thanks for all your advice. I still would like to get someone to fix though instead of me. To answer the question, the mechanic did not want anything to do with it. He said something about it was too hard to work on. I think he has a lot of other business to mess with than our little tractor.

So, if I start down the road to fix it where do I get the manual and where to order parts?

Thanks, Bart

I rebuilt the lift on my Jub last winter. Only took a couple of Saturdays. I did have the tractor place remove and rebush my rock shaft, but otherwise I did everything.

This was my first experience in tractor hydraulics. It was MUCH easier that I had thought.

So did the machanic offer to buy it after he told you it wasn't worth fixing? There is a video out that shows how to rebuild the lift housing under the seat. It's not hard at all.

Keep it.

Ranchdog- Don`t sell it fix it. That mechanic didn`t know what he is talking about. If not to put it to work well keep it in the family. Lots of people on this board would be glad to talk you thru the repair.-Bill

Yea just get rid of it, especially if you dont know how to fix it... oh wait, I didnt know how to replace points, condenser, rotor, cap, hydrolics, carb linkage, and troubleshoot all of those but I sure got a lot of free help on the boards by guys who would love to take that little problem off your hands and fix it themselves.

I work on my 9n on a cement pad with no roof, no walls an old picnic bench for a work table, it doesnt get any worse than that, and when I hear it purr it doesnt get any better than that.

Let see, my dads tractor... I would never get rid of it just because of that one historical fact, let alone what you havent told us.

Good luck on your new project.

James

Ranchdog,
The guys are right. How are ya at "rithmetic? Ya got a tractor worth in the neighborhood of $3000. It"ll cost about $25 for a Shop Service Manual and probably bout $100 for parts. If ya decide to throw it away, just say so on this board, and listen for the stampede.
Russ

With all due respect to your mechanic he is a nut.
It's probably something simple and evan if its not,the value of the tractor is allot more than what it will cost to get the pump worked on. I would have to say fix it.

if it is truly a 1953 golden jubilee [ 1954 models are refered to as the naa]that is a 1 year only commemretive model, and that should be reason enough to get it and get it going i have one and they are really good light duty tractors, they are stronger than the 8n,s and are extremly durable and user frendly, if you really want to get rid of it, just give it to me, and tell me where it is , i will gladly come pick it up and get it out of the way,

his mechanic probably is like the ones around where I live, they have to much work, dont do enough of it and wouldnt want to take on another project especially another project they have no clue as to what needs fixin or how to fix it.

I say keep it, and buy the manual and fix it. Post lots of pictures and illistrations,...because I'm not to far in behind ya myself, as I need to do the same rebuild on my tractor.

good luck and keep us posted
Ben
