I'm looking at buying an 8N long-distance. I think they weigh about 2350 pounds with no attachments. If any of you have ever shipped or received a shipped N, could you tell me how it worked out?

(A related question is whether it is risky to buy a tractor based on pics and a whole lot of trust in the guy at the other end. . .)

Thanks.

as stated most guys are trust worthy, but you will get the few that really turn you off to buying site unseen, it all comes down to the risk you want to take, and how good the pictures are how honest YOU feel the guy is with you,if it is say an ebay deal check his feedback. The price of the tractor would have a great deal of importance whether I would chance the sale. I can say also that it is almost a crapshoot for the seller, I guess sometimes wondering if the guy on the receiving end is going to play fair as well, trying to pull a fast one and state other things wrong with the tractor that actually arent, it is a risk you have to decide if you want to take. I have personally bought many tractors on line , but picked them up, I would say 99% of the time the condition is close to what was stated. Also realize 2 peoples views of the same product will generally be different to some extent. hope that was enuff rambling, pat

ALWAYSYears ago my day was paid by DEERE & CO. for repainting a 48model JD that came into the freight stateion at Gettysburg, PA via RAILWAY express, Western Maryland Line.... had coal cinder damage. He refused acceptance of the tractor because of PAINT DAMAGE.!

lars,
In answer to your second question: Yes, it"s risky. Nearly all sellers are honest, but there are the few who take advantage of any situation they can. If the seller is up front about any problems, willing to send detailed pictures, and there is a good reason for making a long distance deal, the risk has dropped to what one might consider acceptable. Depending on the carrier and distance, shipping can cost way more than the tractor.

If it"s one of these "I"m selling it for a friend and I don"t know much about it," or they claim ignorance about determining servicability, RUN. It translates to: There are problems I"m not telling you about and I"ll swear I thought engines are SUPPOSED to have cracks in the block.

I made an 1800 mile round trip to pick up my 8N. Me and 2 friends made the trip in a little over 32 hours. Towed behind a Chevy Suburban through the mountains of VA, W.VA, and NC, done real fine. I think it cost Me about $300, food, drink and gas included. As for buying from pictures alone and trusting the guy on the other end, I"d have to look"er over Myself. But then again if the price was really good, I might concider it. If it has real good paint and tires it would not bother Me too bad if I had to go through the eng, or fix a few leaks.

Hope this helps.

Jim
