What kind of a job is it to replace the brakes on a 8N?? Thanks Keith

Thanks both Drmeatman and Fessman, great information. Really doesn't look like to bad of a job. The tractor belongs to a friend and he wants me to do the brakes on it for him. I haven't did to much work on the 9N's or 8N's. I have the hundred series Fords. Currently putting a new engine on my Ford 860. Again thanks...Keith

Keith, it's not a "big" job but it does require a little time and most of all the IT-O4 repair manual.Here's a "real" informative site to see how it's done.WWW.8nfords.com Theres a world of info on that site.

With the exception of the springs, piece of cake. I always struggle with the brake springs, maybe there is a special tool you can rent. On the old 8N, I needed an impact driver to back off the screws that hold on the drum. On the Jubilee they were much easier to turn.

I did use a big screw driver as a pry bar to put the springs on, and after doing a few brake jobs they did get easier.

If you get everything apart and things are soaked in oil, you will need to change your seals. This is rather common, so you may want to expect it.

This is one of those jobs that will take one or two evenings to do. Depending on how many hours a night you work on it. You should get the manual (FO19) before you do the job. It will come in hand over the years.

Looked at the website on repairing brakes, they used a 3 jaw puller to remove axel hub. Looks like my tapered axel puller would work better here than the 3 jaw puller. What do you think?

What"s a tapered axel puller? Got a picture? I couldn"t get the left hub off with a 3 jaw puller, heat, PB Blaster or a big hammer, so I just cleaned everything up as best as I could with brake cleaner and put it all back together.

By the way the 4 slotted screws don"t need to be replaced - they were just there to hold the drum on while on the assembly line. The wheel studs are all that is required to hold on both the wheel and drum. I replaced mine before I found this out.

That's exactly the same as the one I have. We used it on the model A & rambler/AMC hubs.

Steve, was used extensively to remove the hubs on Jeep pickups and most vehicles with tapered axles. Kind of like a 3 jaw puller but much heavier. Instead of grabing the hub they used the lugs. If I get the chance will take a picture and post. Where you located in OR ? I am in eastern OR. Hope I can help...Keith

Keith - Thanks for the pics. Using the studs to hook onto looks a lot more robust than the big 3 jaw puller I had rented after I had destroyed a Harbor Freight cheapie. Still didnt budge the hub though. After cleanup the brake works a lot better than before but some day I will have to get it apart.

I live in Milwaukie and the 8N is on proprty in Oregon City.

Fessman, a pair of automotive brake spring plyers makes removing and installing those big nasty blue springs easy.

I suggested the wrong manual, it should be F04, the F019 is for the NAA. Check out the web site I have linked below. It have very good information for if you seals need to be replaced.
