I have my 8N torn apart for an engine rebuild right now. The last owner realy abused this tractor, and last year when I changed the fluid in the trans to get the water out [I think more water then oil] it got milky right away. Well now that its apart, I see my Sherman combo trans has a drain plug on it. I know the trans is kept topped up from the main trans during use, but if I drain the combo trans, should I refill it somehow first? Or do I just let it refill its self douring the first use, when it's back together? Thanks, I realy want to get as much of that old fluid out of the tractor.

Water mixes up with the gear oil then settles to the bottom when the tractor sits a while. If you had water in the rest of the tractor you've got water in the Sherman, too. Since you're already there, definitely drain the old oil out. Then pull the front input shaft off the Sherman and replace the front seal. At about $3 for a seal it's cheap insurance. While you have the front input shaft off refill the Sherman with fresh gear oil.

Drain and refill to be on the safe side. I added a little Lucas, when I redid mine.

I used to think that LUCAS stuff was just great until someone on this board posted this link. I geuss that it has a real problem with air entrainment wich causes the oil to foam up and lose alot of lubricating power...Check it out

How do you refill it? I see the drain, but not a fill.

Paul..... ...since the trannys are shipped EMPTY because they leak out the backend, you haffta fill the Sherman tranny during installation.

iff'n I've said it once, I've said it 100's times; the Sherman aux tranny is AUTOMATICALLY OVER-FILLED by the main tranny's front oilslinger thru the Sherman's rear bearing cage during norman operation. When the tractor is stopped for the day, the over-filled and stirred oil drains back into the main tranny hydraulic reservoir. The 1-qt of aux-oil ain't gonnna contaminate yer 5-gals of main hydro-tranny oil, don't worry about changing it..... ....respectfully, Dell
