Questions about newly rebuilt engine

Tried to start my rebuilt engine today. Turns over easily, getting blue sparks on all 4 cylinders, using temporary gas tank with good flow. Tried her for approx 20 minutes, only sounded like it was going to catch once or twice. Never did though. Background info: 46 2N front mount with 8N engine, starter and generator all rebuilt professionally, new battery fully charged, tuneup kit, points and timing set properly, I think. When I reassembled the engine, I did pack the oil pump with engine lube for priming, but I still worry about cranking it so much, will it cause any problems. Would love to get this going, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Rick

I have been putting about a tablespoon of motor oil in each cylinder before trying to start a rebuild and have never had any trouble starting one since coming up with the idea.
The idea came to me on the morning of April 12, 1959. :O)
I just re-ringed an 8N this past week and it started the very first turn of the engine. What it does is to raise the compression lots by sealing up all the little compression leaks caused by that little bitty bit of grit you left between the moving parts and the valve and rings.

Trust me it won't foul your new spark plugs. May smoke just a couple of minutes but that is it.

Rick, You might check to make sure that the manifold is properly seated. I had this same problem and discovered that I had a huge vacuum leak. Engine fires and almost starts. The manifold was pinching one of the valve covers. Good luck. Joe

Are the valves adjusted too tight ?
