My new aluminum Cam gear came today and I went out and stuck it on real quik to see if it made my tapping noise go away and it seems to have fixed the problem. Now I just wanted to make sure I have it right. I put the timing mark on What seems to be the timing mark on the Crank. the mark on the Crank is very faint and is shaped like a slanted 0, Does this sound right? Ok now does the pistons have to be in any certin position or anything like that when they line up?

Now the Cam gear will pull out away from the block and evan bounce back and forth a little when you turn it over. Will this stop when I put the cover on?

Sorry about all the questions but I want to do this right the first time so I came to the experts.

There is no timing relationship between the timing marks and the position of the pistons in the cylinders.

That's what the crank gear timing mark looks like. O.

When the gears are in perfect time if the #1 piston is at TDC on compression stroke you can look at the valves on the #4 cylinder and the exhaust should be just closing as the intake opens or viceversa if you turn the engine back and forth. You can remove the rear tappet chamber cover to observe the cam action if you don't have the head off.

Zane..I seldom post but always read this great discusion board, and I highly respect your opionions, but my German heratage will not let me agree with your first sentence. Is not the crankshaft always in the same spot when the timing marks are lined up? And is not that spot with number 1 piston at top dead center? whm

No it is not. The timing marks on the cam and crank do not make the piston be on TDC when the two marks are together.

What Zane is say’n is just cuz the crank gear has a timing mark or if you line the mark on the crank gear to the cam gear that does not mean the crank is at # 1 TDC. All N’s I have seen when the marks are lined up to # one crank throw is at 90 degs.. Not only did Ford do this on the N they also did this to some on their inline 6’s. It is possible with a mix of OEM and aftermarket parts to git a mismatch and be out of time. Follow my tip on check’n valve overlap and it will work on enny engine as long as you know the firing order and what cylinder they time the engine two
