I was going to put my head back on tomorrow but the original nuts are in bad shape. Is there a substitute I can get or do I need the original replacements? Napa had some #8 nuts that would fit but they are not as deep as the original. What do you think

Here in Dallas we are blessed with a store called Elliotts Hardware. They have two full isles of fasteners, roll pins, studs, woodruff keys, hardened dowel pins, c-clips - you name it. They carry grade 5 and grade 8 bolts of all sizes and in fine and course threads AND a full line of 7/16" bolts in both grades. The old man that works that department is VERY knowledgable in that area and knows me pretty well by now. I go in about 2 times a week getting new bolts. Almost every bolt, nut, washer, stud, etc. on Project Rustbucket has been replaced and the ONLY bolt I could not find was the darn clutch pressure plate to flywheel bolt. So I ended up using a grade 8 bolt the same size without the shoulder.

Point is, find your "Elliotts" and it will serve you well.

Good luck,
Dan

Roughstock, I had a machine shop build my 39 9N engine last year and I asked Chuck to come up with some new tall 7/16" sae nuts and locktite them to the studs with 1 and 1/2 threads showing. The next day Chuck called and said he was using nuts from a big block Chevy main bearing stud kit. They look great...thanks, Kelly.

There's a company that makes all kind of hardware for the HP, and auto restore hobby. The name is ARP. Not sure if they have a web site, but I have used there stuff on many motor projects, and it is A#1 stuff!!! Search it out, I assume they can get what you need.

if ya gotta ACE hardware near they have all the studs and nuts you'll ever need in grade 8 fine thread or you could always do it the redneck way and getta tap to chase the threads and a angle grinder to true up or nearly true up the sides of the nuts
