With those terminals, you have a version of the Delco CS-130 alternator, a newer series than the 10SI or 12SI units most often used. Yes, the "L" terminal is "light", as in "idiot light". DO NOT connect this terminal dierectly to the ignition switch. There needs to be an "idiot light" or at least 35 Ohms resistance in this lead, or internal regulator damage can occur. The problem is, there are at least 2 factory versions of the regulator in these alternators, plus self-exciting aftermarket versions. Some of these alternators will work with no connections the terminals you mention, some need 1 wire, and some need two, it is impossible to tell by looking. If you can read the original part number on the alternator (and know it hasn't been modified), or know the original application, it should be possible to track down what regualtor it has, and how to hook it up. Has it been working with the "L" wire hooked up? Google "DELCO CS-130". There'll be lots of "hits", as these are becoming a popular alternator for conversions due to their compact size, high power output, and good charging rate at idle.
