49 8N brake pad replacement troubles

I just replaced the rear seal on my 49 8N (right side) and had little trouble doing so. But I now have a slight problem, bought new brake pads for it, put them on and got the springs on (that was not easy). I have the other side apart to compare as to make sure I put them together correctly. Everything seems to be correct and working, but the problem is I can not get the brake drum back on, it's almost like the brake pads are too thick, it isn't much but they are just wide enough to not allow me to slide the drum on. Any ideas what the heck I am doing wrong? Thanks,

Olaf

I take a flat file and knock down the top and bottom edge of the shoe. Been doing this on my cars for many years.

Also try sanding the sharp edges of the lining a tad. (across the width, not the length of the lining)

You probably have a ridge on the edge of your metal brake drum where the pads have worn down the middle over the years, it will be fine once you get past this ridge, as long as you have backed in the adjuster all the way. I had to use a fairly nice sized hammer going around my drum to get it on when I put new shoes on my 48 8N a few years ago. Popped right on once I worked it past the ridge. If you really want to do it right, you can take it to a good brake shop and have them turn this ridge off, but I just pounded mine on as is. Remember - this is OLD IRON, you don't "tap" on old iron - you "beat" on it :)

Good luck,
Dan

I wonder if that isn't the problem, it looks so close to going on that maybe this could do it. And thanks for tip- don't tap it- HIT IT!

Olaf,
I believe Dan is correct. On mine, I hung it on the top shoe and pulled the bottom shoe outward with my fingers in order to get it started. If the drum pushes a shoe inward, it increases the diameter very lightly. If that"s not the case, there is another problem: something keeping the retractor from going all the way in, the pivot point opposite the retractor is not centering, drum out of round from running over rocks, etc.

Make sure the brake pedal is all the way up and not hanging down a little, thus expanding the shoes slightly. I had this happen to me once. Might have to prop it up, or tie it up. Just a thought.

I did that, I used a plastic cup to hold it in place. Thanks for the tip!

Olaf, did you back off the adjuster all the way? Also make sure the brake pedal is in the fully up position and not trying to spread the shoes apart. Hope this helps ya.

I did that when I installed them, I think they are as close together as I can get them. That"s what is so puzzling for me!

How much thicker is the lining on the new shoes compared to the shoes you took off? Did you compare the new shoes to the old ones by putting them next to each other just to be sure everything is the same? Please dont think I'm trying to treat you like a dummy by asking these questions Its just that sometimes the slightest things get overlooked.

I didn't, I bought them from a guy who owns a Tractor repair shop that specializes in 8n's. I never even questioned that the were incorrect. They look exactly like the ones I took off and fit on the mounting plate well. The springs fit right and the adjuster is screwed all the way down. It looks to be about 1/16 of inch to thick to get the drum slid on. Thanks for the help!

Olaf, did you buy shoes to do the other side as well? Is it possible you got one wrong shoe on the right side and that it goes on the left side? In my I&T repair manual it states " One shoe and lining fits either R.H. upper or L.H. lower position. The other shoe fits R.H. lower or L.H.upper position."

I don't know the answer to that one, I'll check with the place I bought them to make sure. Thanks for all your input!

I have seen this before on cars I have worked on. One side had two leading shoes, the other two trailing shoes. I have not dont my N's. so dont know if thats possable or not though.

Also in years past, I remember having to sand down shoes a bit to match the drums. Maybe called "arcing the shoes"?? Going WAY back though. May have to see where they are hitting, and give it a hit with a grinder.

Also did you have a little rust build up on the edge of the drum? Maybe a light cleanup cut on the drums will true it all up. I also remember a lot of the OLD replacement shoes were sized a little bigger for a turned drum.

Hope this helps

Paul B
