How long does a good lift stay up for?

Ok I have my old 8N torn down for a rebuild. Mostly just the motor, but sence I am giving it a quick repaint, I am pulling all the covers, resealing, and getting everything adjusted. Last night I removed the lift assambly. Now my lift, with a 5' brushcutter, stays up for about 6-10 hours. This is in cold wether, with 90w oil in it. Now I know that seems pretty good, and granted in warmer wether I am sure it will drop sooner. My Q is wether a good system, like when it was new, will hold the cutter up for how long? Should I replace the piston/rings wile I have it apart anyway? Should I upgrade to the NAA style? Or just leave it alone? Thanks!!

I would base my decision on how long you intend to own the tractor. It is easy enough to do.

I agree with Hooker. Yours sounds pretty good. I've had my 51 8N apart several times over the years replacing and/or adjusting one part or another. Last time I installed a new NAA cylinder and piston. With cold 90 wt oil in cold weather it will probably hold the mower up overnight but if oil is hot no more than a few hours. I have since converted it over to 134 oil and of course it will not remain up as long (maybe 1 hour if hot) but operation of hydraulics and transmission is much improved in cold weather.

i WOULDN"T touch it on a bet, i wouldn't even open the inspection plates, i've rebuilt units that stay up 4-5 hrs. at the very best and thats not bad...
just remember to set your imp. on the ground cuz you sure would feel bad if the next morning you got up to see if its still up and a kids squaushed under it ({[ kids are just like us, they like tractors]})

Other than 'braggin rights' and diagnostics, holding something in the air for multiple hours is pretty useless. 6-10 hours indicates your system is in pretty good shape with no major leaks. I'd leave it alone. For safety sake, always lower the lift when leaving the tractor unattended, even for a short time. Steve 8N I69302

Oh I do leave it down. I had just left it up to test the system.

Well I think I may let it stay then. I already thae the parts off the tractor, and they REALY need a cleaning. VERY sludgy in there. Plus it is WAY out of adjustment, so I have my work cut out for me. And just think. this all started with just a quicky engine rebuild.
