Im home with a sick 6 year old today so Im having lots of time on my hands.

I was wondering what everyone thought about painting parts to keep them painted while I am fixing and restoring other parts of the tractor.

My hood and fenders are pretty faded out and are bare in a few spots on the back side.

What are your thoughts about hitting it with some shaker can rustoleum to keep the parts preserved even though I will come back later and strip off all of the paint and re-do the work.

It is a working tractor and I cant have it down while I do every part perfect before the re-assmbly. I plowed for about 2 hours then moved wood from the back pasture to the house for cutting, gotta have The Ol Girl working for her keep or the wife gets a little testy about buying parts for the The Ol Girl and forgetting about the wife, (everyone take a hint)...

I paint parts while waiting to get new parts in to complete the particular section I am working on. For instance, while I was waiting for the engine rebuild parts to come in and for the machine shop to complete their end, I was wire wheeling and painting steering boxes, air cleaners, fan blade, etc. Only I clean them up and paint them the color I will be using because I use a lot of rattle cans. Mine isn't a restoration in the truest sense, but if you have plenty of time between sections - spray paint painting can be made to look just as well as air brushed painting. I used to have a problem touching up the bolts and such when installing parts I painted previously, but on my current project I am replacing all the bolts anyway - so they are nice and shiny with no paint on them to scuff up as I am installing them...

Good luck,
Dan

One of the things that I try to do is to keep a rattle can of each color of primer around. Grey lends itself to be somewhat close to the sheet metal colours, and red oxide is close to the red on the cast iron. One thing about it, it doesn't provide as much protection as proper paint, but, it's easier to sand, and will help fill in the low spots in the paint for when you do get around to sanding/painting.

Paint.. any paint.. will keep the rust down. Heck.. I wouldn't take it all off if i could sand down to 'good' even base paint And start there, if it was a working tractor.
