How hard is it to split an 8n and change a clutch.

I have a 1949 8n. Just got it back in early Janurary.
Right before I got there to look at it I could tell the guy filled it up with fluids. He topped off the oil, radiator, and transmission.
He overfilled the transmission really bad and it leaked out the front tranny seal into the bell housing. Must have gotten on the clutch cause now the clutch slips under a moderate load and it slips when taking off in 4th gear. It seems to be just getting worse so I will probably need a new clutch sometime before summer and hot weather gets here.
I'm new to owning a tractor. I used to do all my own work on cars and trucks, but not really able to do much anymore. I can probably do this, just will take me longer.

So how hard is it to split an 8n and change a clutch.
What is involved and what could I run into doing this.
How hard is it to get everything back together.

I will be getting the F04 manual soon.

So far this thing runs great and I am really pleased with it. I only planned on mowing with it but I got a dirt scoop for it last week and been playing with that. Plan on getting some other stuff too.

No need to remove the front end at all.

Put something under the oil pan like a small bottle jack or small floor jack and then hook a chain hoist to the center of the steering wheel, Support the clutch housing with a floor jack that can be rolled back with the rear of the tractor. Remove the bolts from the steering box where it is bolted to the clutch housing. Remove the bolts from around the Engine to clutch housing. Take up on the chain hoist at the steering wheel to support the hood and steering column and if everything is loose roll the rear back till the pilot shaft is clear of the clutch disc and let the clutch housing down enough to get by the steering box and then roll it all the way back till you have room to remove the pressure plate.

I have many times been able to unstuck a clutch by tying the clutch pedal down and then getting it out on the road in fourth gear and jumping up and down on one or the other brake. You can start it in gear by shorting the starter solenoid small wire to ground while in the seat and ready to go in a direction that you will not be likely to run into something.
You will need to do some truck driver gear shifting to get it into high gear but it can be done by manipulating the throttle on a level road while shifting. Don’t force the shifter though. If you can’t get it back into high gear let it come to a halt and start again. You don’t’ want to add insult to injury by breaking something in the transmission.

Does your clutch pedal have "free travel"? If it doesn't, that would explain the slipping.

Often, if getting some oil in a clutch from overfilling with a leaky seal is a "one time thing", the oil will burn off, and the clutch will get better with time.

I haven't inspected anything or tried to adjust the clutch any.
I figured once it has gotten oil on it then it is ruined.
I'll look and see if it can be adjusted any.

I don't really have a place to work on this.
I don't have a garage or barn or anything.
So I have work on it out in the backyard.

Wonder what it would cost to have this done.
Hate to go that route, but something to think about.

I figure I can get it apart no problem.
How hard is it to line everything back up and get it back together.

Definitely would replace the front tranny seal.
That is what caused the whole problem.

Do I have to change the pressure plate and throwout bearing too or can I just change the clutch disk.
Don't want to spend money unless I have to.

Pooh..... ...just need to change yer clutch plate the flywheel and pressure plate are metal and don't soak-up oil but do need to be cleaned. Smidge of lubri-plate on tranny splines that the clutch slides on. Most of the times yer clutch throwout bearing is good, but you can always rotate it and feel for grit. They're sealed.

Professional mechanics automatically replace the throwout bearing, not because it is bad, but because you the customer pay for it and would raize billyheil iff'n it showed up "bad" after spending $500 for a clutch job, and besides the customer pays for the first tractor split and the 2nd is on the mechanic. Your call. 2nd split is always faster than the first on for neubie..... ...Dell
