We have a 51 8N. The other day it developed a noise in the tranny. We diagnosed it as a couple of gears rubbing together as it sounded like we were trying to put it into gear with out disengaging the clutch. I feel there is a lot of movement in the gearshift lever. Does anybody have any specifications on the holes and slots in the "gearshift plates" or the ball end on the gearshaft lever.

I have an old edition of FO4 and a service parts catalog. It has been many years since I have had the tranny open so I don't remember the layout of every thing.

Thanks for your help

It should be fairly noticable once you get inside to find where the wear is going on. If you see any flat spots on the gear shift lever ball, that's bad. Also, look at how sloppy the ball fits into the slot. My personal guess at what is going on is that (as you guessed) the slot and/or ball is worn out. This may be allowing you to partially be in two gears at the same time....that is, not fully disengaging one set of gears when you shift into another set. Only solution is to get in there and take a look.
