Hi Everyone,

It seems like I read somewhere that the implements available for the 8N model were the first to carry the name "Dearborn". If this is so, what "brand name" did the equipment for the 9N and 2N go by? Ford? Ferguson? Something else? Were those implements painted the darker gray, too? Thanks,
Randy2N

Yes, as Rlach said, Everything prior to 1948 was Ferguson implements. Harry Ferguson designed the 3-point hitch and consequently the implements that went with them. Upon Henry Fords death in 1947 and the introduction of the newly designed 8N (without the "ferguson system" badge on the grill), Bitterness arose between Ford and Ferguson causing ferguson to split off and market his own tractor line (start of the Ferguson TO series tractors).

Since Ford didn't have official access to Ferguson implements and still wanted to keep an implement line in house, they basically copied the ferguson implements they had been marketing and made minor changes and improvements to try and get around patent infringements. Thus, the Dearborn line of implements was born as an offshoot of the original Ferguson Line. All Ferguson implements were the dark gray/black layout and the dearborns were red to keep in tune with the new 8N paint scheme.

And don't forget that the light gray for the 8N sheetmetal was originally settled on to be as close to the color of pigeon poop as possible to hide barn "decorations".

Jeb, if you go back to 1939, the implement tag was Ferguson Sherman Mfg Co. The story goes Harry didn't get started very quickly, so Eber stepped in with deep pockets. My early AO12B plow has Ferguson Sherman Mfg. Co on a brass tag and Ford script in the front beam. I've been told Ford made some of this plow at the Rouge plant because Harry did not have one ready. It seems Harry raised so much Hell about the Ford script, they took it out. I've read the Ferguson Sherman split was about 1941, Harry's pockets were probably deeper by then. Also, I read where Harold Brock said the 8N red paint was chosen because it didn't show rust as bad after a scratch. Jeb, the minor changes you mentioned when Dearborn came into play I think the best example was the width of cut adjustment on the 1948 plow, the offset block with U BOLT, what a piece of crap. My 2 cents worth....Kelly.,

The story I heard on the red was one of the board of directors' wives had a red dress he really really liked and he was able to convince the rest of the board to go with this new color on the chassis. Again, this is all just from what I remember reading in one of the books.

As for the U-bolt, i'm not that familiar with the plows. And I had forgotten that the earlier implements were Ferguson-Sherman, as you said, but they were still basically considered "ferguson" implements and that's all the guy was really looking to know. I appreciate the input. I had a feeling when I saw that you had responded to my post that I was in for a "talkin' to" about something I wrote! hahahaha. You have a lot of information and I appreciate your input.

BTW, I checked my alignment, and I have a noticable amount of toe-out on the front, so somehow my draglinks readjusted themselves when I wasn't looking. Looks like i'll be pulling them again and trying my hardest not to scratch the paint!
