I know a similar question was asked yesterday and I tried to jump in on that post but everyone had moved on. My problem is when I had my tractor apart
I had to remove all the wires off the altenator and I am pretty sure I put them back in the same place but now the ammeater reads 30+ when it is running and 0 when its off,10 with just the key on.I have a altenator with the plug on top that is jumperd to the hot post on the back of the alt.
When I was removing it I had some fireworks when the wires hit the alt. housing. It is a 12 volt system and the Question yesterday was on a 6volt. THANKS and it is 1948 front mount dist..

Ruffie..... ..ya say ya did some sparkies while ya was tryin' to figger out yer alternator re-wiring? Bettcha ya lett the smoke outta yer alternator's solidstate internal regulator. You do know that all electrical stuff runs on smoke, don't you? You doubt? Everytime ya lett the smoke out, it quits runnin'. Right?

Take yer alternator in to an autoparts store for "free" checkout.

And NO, ya didn't muck-up yer ammeter, theys pretty much bullett-proof, don't care 6 or 12v and don't care positive or negative ground. Alternator internal guttz DEMAND NEGATIVE GROUND. But you care, traditionally ammeters indicate (+) when charging the battery and (-) when discharging the battery. So iff'n ya know yer really charging the battery (like yer engine is runnin') and yer ammeter ain't readin' (+) then ya most likely have yer ammeter wiring backwards. Just swap wires at the back of the ammeter so it agrees with what you really know, chargin' or dischargin'.

When you're sure yer alternator is good (tip: disconnect yer battery during installation) Hardwire yer alternator P-2 sense terminal (r/h terminal) with short wire to the BIG BATT STUD which eventually goes to the ammeter. Connect yer P-1 excite terminal (L/h terminal) back to yer ignition switch thru yer make-believe idiot-lite. NOW, connect up yer 12v battery for NEGATIVE GROUND..... .....Dell, a 12v advocate for the right reason
