Like the other poster said.. we will need more info. I'm going to pretend I'm Dell, and then use his often downplayed mental powers and attempt to lay out what you are describing.

You have a 9n or 2n with a 3rd brush adjustable genny.. and it has the oem round can cutout relay.

You have had a dead battery. You hooked jumper cables battery to battery to jump the tractor off. previous to this you polarized your round can relay.

When you got the tractor started you noticed no charge on the ammeter. You removed the other battery, and the tractor stalled.

Ok.. assuming any of that is correct.. here's what we can distill from it.

1, your primary battery is so dead it won't sustain the ignition. This could be simply discharged.. or could be dead dead..

You didn't mention whether your ammeter showed a negative deflection to account for the 3-4 amp draw by the ignition. If not.. I'd say you might have some wiring problems.. even an open ammeter if 'post' type.. though those are pretty bullet proof (shunt voltmeter).

If you are getting a negative deflection, then I suggest you try the following things. First.. if you have not already.. turn the charge adjustment up.. for test purposes.. set it to max. Now.. reinstall the donor battery via booster cables, and restart the tractor.. now.. if you show no charge.. bypass the cutout.. if the ammeter suddenly shows a swing positive, then you can bet that your cutout relay is gone, and not pulling in. If there is no swing.. then you need to pull the genny for some tests.

Unless you feel like getting into it.. I'd try a bench motoring test.. usually if it will motor.. it will charge. If it won't motor.. time to tear it down.. or simply take it to a mom-n-pop rebuild shop.

Here are a fey other tests for S&G's

Remove the wire from the cutout relay that runs back to the dash, and hook up your battery charger.. remember to get correct polarity. ( if still pos grnd ) so positive battery charger clip to ground.. and then touch the negative battery charger lead to the wire you removed. If your tractors ammeter now suddenly shows a positive deflection / charge.. your wireing is at least somewhat functional.

Report back what you find

It died when you took off the jumper cables? in reply to b boy, 03-20-2005 17:22:05
You got all the cables cleaned up? Bright, shiny and tight? The ammeter might be bad.

That battery might need some charge on it before you can run the tractor or it might be shorted and no good.

You don"t say much in that post.
