Starter won't disengage

My starter turns and starts the tractor just fine, but it keeps spinning. My first guess was a failing starter, but I've read through the archives and it looks like this could also be three things:

- bendix mechanically stuck in engaged position
- low battery juice
- bad solenoid

any other ideas?

You probably have it fixed for now but if the starter keeps spinning then some thing and not the bendix is keeping the magnetic coil energized maybe even a bad starter switch. Just a thought good luck

My neighbor has a 8n and his kept spinning, he said he beat on the solenoid or relay depending on what school your from, until it stopped. O'reilly's carries them.

If the starter bendix disengaged because of beating on the solenoid, it's only coincidental. The starter bendix is not an electrical hookup, and disengages only after a certain rpm is reached, unless dirt of damage prevents it.

Rob..... .most solenoid failures are "open circuit" which I discount because you can start your tractor.

Starter drive failure most eazily diagnosted by removing starter and visually inspecting drive. Starter drive must be clean and non-oily to work properly..... ..Dell
