Heres what I got Ihave a 9n with a pretty new charged battery. I have polarized my round cam. While the tractor is running I take off a battery cable and the tractor dies. Does this mean my generator is not charging. My two postgen. gage does not show pos. or neg charge it shows 0

You can check the genny by motoring it. Take off the fan belt, apply 6 volts to the single post on the back of the genny, and the genny will turn if it is working. Don't run it to long, it tends to get hot. If the genny turns, the cut out relay is probably bad.

I don't know about pulling off the cable. in reply to b boy, 03-21-2005 17:17:34
I don"t know I"ve ever tried that. Don"t know why I would.
If the ammeter doesn"t show some discharge when you crank the engine before it fires up that meter isn"t any good. If it"s hooked up right anyway. If it doesn"t work you can"t know much about the generator. Those meters sell at TSC for like $10. Get a good meter you can tell something about the genny.
You could take the round can (cutout relay?), generator, and ammeter to the generator/alternator/starter shop and have them checked. For sure take the relay with the generator so the guy can check them together.

Bouy..... ...what it means is yer 2-terminal ammeter is not even wired into the charging circuit and yer runnin' yer sparkie off'n yer battery at all times and yer never chargin' yer battery. A good 6v battery can start and run a good N-Tractor daily for about a month before the battery poops out and needs to be recharged. Unfortunately, I can't tell you which wire is wrong, I flunked mindreading, just ask my ex-wife of 32 years..... ....Dell
