Question on 9N Rods

My father and I are in the early stages of restoring a 1941 9N that I bought for a rediculously cheap price from the farmer that had owned it for years. The engine was stuck but since we are doing a total restore that was not a problem. We took the engine down to the block and sent it off to the machine shop for milling and replacement of the sleeves, ect, ect. Well we got it back and when we started assembling the engine we found that two of the rods had been installed wrong the last time the engine was rebuilt.

The Ford manual says the oil squirt holes in the rods go toward the front of the engine. We looked when we took the engine apart and the person that had assembled the engine last time had marked the rods and caps with chisel marks (one for cylinder 1, ect) on the side away from the camshaft, which we thought at the time was a little strange. When we went to put the rods back in we found that two of them would face the front and two would face the rear if we put them back in as they were. We installed them correctly with all the oil holes facing forward but thought I would run it by you guys to see if anyone knows of any reason they should be the other way.

Thanks all. I really enjoy this board.

Paul K.

you got it right as long as all the holes line up with the holes in the crank,, if not guess what---that would be considered a practice run and you'll get faster the next time ya have to tear it all down
wonder how many times GRANETELLI's pitcrew had to do that before they got it right?????
just my $.02

From the I&T FO-4 manual (Paragraph 36) "Rods may be installed with the oil squirt hole facing FORWARD or BACKWARD".

So, they'll work either way, not worth obsessing about! Obviously, the last guy in there didn't!

As long as the individual caps are installed on the proper rods, in the correct orientation, all will be well!
