8N Starter Conversion

I am in the process of converting my 8N to a 12V system. However, in order to do so I need to change the system from a positive ground to a negative ground. This will cause the starter to run backwards. Does anybody know if there is an easy way to convert the starter from a positive case ground to a negative case ground? Or am I better off going to a starter shop and save myself the trouble?

the starter is is in series, battery and ground make no differenc to it. use a gm alt.{biult in voltage reg.} and 12v batt. get wiring from old gm. car book. amp meter swap wires on it. use 2in pipe nipples under gen mounting bracket, and put old pully from gen onto alt. the starter will take the 12volt ok . ran mine for 4yrs till i sold it.i know the new owner same starter moter 15 yr. no trouble.

My first boss told me that if you hooked the battery up backwards, the radio would listen, the headlights would cast a shadow, and the horn would suck. I've been very careful since he told me that!

I heard that it's the same result if you reverse the polarity on the starter. It turns the engine over in the opposite direction, which means the gears are reversed because the engine is turning in the opposite direction when it starts. On the 8N, you would have 4 reverse gears and one forward. We must have talked to the same guy!!!

Yeah - Mowers make grass taller, you can unplow your land, and a baler will break bales and scatter the hay (oops - that is normal for my old baler!)

Starter doesn't care which way the voltage is wired! Mine is converted, and works the same...just cranks faster! Don't worry about it!

Starter rotation does not depend on electrical system polarity. Rotation is controlled by field lead which is mechanically provided by brush location. Your starter will work just fine on 12 volts. It will spin noticeably faster and therefore, you should limit it's operation in a no-start situation to about 30 second crank periods to allow cool down.
