Connecting rod questions

How critical is it to put the connecting rod back in its original cyclinder if you put in a new crank, all new bearings, new pistons, etc.? Also I saw a post a week or so on the placing of the rods in the cyclinder. I think Zane said that with the arrow on the top of the piston facing forward the bearing tabs should face to the left side of the engine. Mine were not that way when they came out, should I put them in that way now? How does this work with the statement in the manual that the oil squirt hole can face either way. Thanks for any enlightenment in this area.

By the way the crank is in and turns nicely. It is getting harder with the pistons in but it still turns over.

Also I am having trouble getting the new valves in . One went in easy but the others are giving me fits. I pushed down on the top of the valve assembly to get the one exhaust valve in. Do they make a valve lifter (6505-A)as shown in the Ford manual?

Thanks for all your help in the past.

Alex

If you have all new bearings, etc. it doesn't matter where you put the rod, and yes, Zane has said that the bearing tabs should go on the right as you look at the front of the engine. By the way, I hope you installed new rod bushings, since you are installing new piston pins on those old rods. My FO-4 manual also says that the oil holes can go either way, but I'd go with Zane's advice. My $.02
