Ive had a 50 Side mount 8N for 5 years and have went through 2 going on 3 regulators. The local rebuild shop said that you can't get a quality regulator anymore. I also have another 50 8n that has a farmered auto regulator that previous owner said was put on 15 years ago, and works perfect. Anyone else having trouble getting a regulator to last more than a couple of years.

I have a TSC regulator on my "51 8N. I think it"s TSC, anyway it"s not but 3 or 4 years old. It stopped working but then I miss wired it a couple years ago. I put a harness on and crossed the FLD and ARM. I polarized it a couple times from BAT to FLD which is supposed to burn contacts. All of that probably didn"t do it any good so I"m not real surprised it showed up this spring not working.
I opened it up and it looked fine, it looked pristine. I sanded the normally-closed contacts (told they burn when polarized wrong but I"m not believing that anymore) and adjusted them according to the FO-4 manual and now it works fine again.
Don"t know how long that will last. It looks as substantial and stout as the old, old regulator off my 2N. Pretty basic stuff.

Yep - polorizing your "A" circuit 8N regulator by arc sparking between the "FLD" and "BAT" INSTANTLY destroys your regulator from what I am told. This is how you polorize a "B" circuit NAA/600/800 regulator.

You polorize an "A" circuit regulator by arc sparking between the "ARM" and "BAT" - I learned the hard way as well. I am surprised to hear yours still works.

Sorry,
Dan

I've been told that burns the points. It didn't. in reply to Dan, 03-23-2005 13:30:08
The kid at the local generator shop told me that too.

I wanted to talk to his dad but he wasn"t there.

The NC points are made different than the cutout. The NC points are hard like ignition points and the cutout are like solder, a button of solder. Those points had been arced and I can see how they might melt together but these were lose and the cutout/cut-in volts were according to the book.
