I have an old cart that, I think, my dad brought home from the steel mill. I can remember as a kid that this was still together. Now all the wood is rotted away. I want to fix this up nice with oak planking and shiny paint and such. I have been trying to find some vintage photos so I can figure out how to put the front axle back on. Any info on this would be great...Thanks Tim

Looks like you'll have some blocking in reply to TIMW(PA), 03-22-2005 19:38:34
running perpendicular to the deck before you get the spacing correct and the deck level. The axle would fasten to the blocking. Might take a couple short planks under the deck, one longer than the other.

That is a 5th wheel wagon platform truck. It has a steel bound wood deck.

Try those search terms in your browser and see what the internet has to offer.

That what i needed. The name helped alot. I had searched under
-Platform truck
-baggage cart
industrial cart and wagon
-material handling
-etc etc
Any way most of the searches were coming back for 5th wheel truck hitches for a trailer...but I found one that is real close from northern tool that gives a good picture. If you have a better scource let me know...Thanks alot

That is a good example of the blocking. in reply to TIMW(PA), 03-23-2005 09:46:04
That"s blocked clear off the axle, front and back.

You"ll find more under "fifth wheel wagon" including some historical stuff about draft horses and teamsters so you might see pics of some of the older trucks.

I didn"t look at all of it but that looks like the key search terms.

Once your planking is back in place it will be obvious how the front axel goes.
The center bolt of the pivot goe through the plank, and then the strap that holds the center pivot blots back of the center bolt.
Look at a kids wagon (that how I know :-)

Thanks...But it seems to me something is missing. The center bolts are long enough but there really isnt anything to keep the bolt fron pushing right up through and the wagon coming right down on the wheels. There either had to be more blocking or a missing bracket to keep that from happening. I just wanted to do it right and historically acurate...Thanks Tim
