Can ya pull an old Mccormick Deering No. 7 mower behind the 8N. Reason I'm askin is I had some mighty tall briars that need to be taken down looks like it'd be far easier with that tar bar stickin out da side of d tractor vs trying to hog em by just runnin through em. The sickle bar moved when I rolled the old thing out (by hand) of the old ice destroyed barn but the wood post from the gears to the bar broke it was rotted. It just got me thinking I was rginally gonna make one of them dar yard orni mants out of it but ifin I could actually use it why not.

You have to get the tongue height right or your sicklebar will dig into the ground. That may take a double tongue. One bolted under the other to raise your tongue height. Although if you use your 3 pt drawbar you will be able to adjust it hydraulically. I think your 3 pt drawbar will also enable you to make pretty square corners as it positions the pivot point back farther than the swinging drawbar would. What I am trying to say is if you just cut off the tongue and hook it to a drawbar of standard height, it will be lower at that point than a tongue pulled by horses.

In 1950 , my dad shortened the tongue in horse drawn sickle mower, rigged the lift lever up with pulleys and rope so sickle bar could be raised and lowered from tractor seat (a new 8N) without having to stop.

I have one of those and use it a lot. I like it because you can hitch and unhitch quick and easy to my 8n. If it still has the long tounge you can shorten it for your tractor and when you unhitch set it on a block of wood. The only trouble I have sometimes the sickle will get stuck and wheels will slide as there is nobody on the seat to give it some weight.

Dont know why not. Replace or rebuild the pitman and make sure the mower is well oiled and greased. Probably have to go in 1st.or 2nd.gear.

I would liked to have had one some years back when I was still on the farm.

Can't go any faster in the bria patch any way. The sickle bar should be far easier. Course depending on the size to the base of the trunks! Some of the thourns look like they could kill a man.

Yes you can, that the only kind of hay mower my grandpa ever had, did all his haying that way only thing is he had a Johnny popper. If it hard going you may need to add some weight to the mower for traction. Fix er up and have at it.

Here's an old ad for a horse-drawn mower! Another of the dreaded collection I was talking about in another post!
