This morning moving the MCCormick Deering No.7 out of the old demolished barn so I could start the rebuild. All of a suddedn the 8N"s clutch didn"t seem to want to work!. It worked fine when I put her in gear to go to the barn but when I pushed it in to drop it in Neutral and turn off the PTO all I got was grrrrr r of the PTO lever and a quick jolt out of reverse. When I hooked up the mower and went to mover out and lift the boom clutch pushed in grrrrr rrr on the PTO lever and first gear. Finally got it reluctantly into 4th and managed to get the mower where I need it and the tractor back in it"s space but still no clutch. Parked and in neutral now. Any ideas? Free play at clutch feels about right.

Well looks like the picture won't load. It's in the Gallery under parts & pieces 52 8N clutch. I'm thinking that's adjusted awfully high on the screw.

pf,
Adjustment looks fine. By freeplay "feels ok" do you mean it is at three-quarters of an inch? As long as you have SOME freeplay, the clutch is engaging as fully as it can. If it was my tractor, I would adjust the freeplay down to maybe half inch and try to get a little more time out of it. BTW, when you checked the linkage, did you watch it as the pedal was depressed and released?
With the right tools, jacks, and a good place to work, a clutch is quality time with yer tractor. With a dirt floor, unlimited headroom and a few sticks of firewood, it can be downright miserable.

Yeah the linkage moved freely in and out and the free play looked to be about 1/2 in for the ruler. As far as splitting goes don"t have a barn anymore since the Ice storm did the roof in would have to do anything on my own in the barn lot and that doesn"t sound like it would be too much fun! I guess I"ll try and adj it down a little and see if that gets me to at least be able to get some post holes dug for the new barn and then get it hauled to the local NH shop to get the clutch repaired. I"ve only had it two years now and it"s been out of commission more than in over that time.

pf,
Afore ya go draggin it down to the dealer, take a real close look at yer linkage on the left side of the transmission. If a bracket or pin gives way, ya can have the symptoms you describe. Hope that"s all it is.

Affraid that was the problem seems every spring it"s something new. If it"s time to split it and put a new clutch in her I"ll have to haul it to local NH dealer since I have no shop to do it in. Bet that will cost about $400 or $500.

Nope in KY. Would have to do this outside if I split it myself. Have put plenty of clutches in cars and trucks but always on concrete never on the grass. Plus have notihing to hold up the front and back figures I finally get it starting every time with 1 push of button and something big goes. Oh well so in the life of a tractor huh.

2 sheets of 3/4" plywood does great, a concrete block to sure up the front end, and a rolling jack for the tranny part and roll the rearend back a little ways would probably save yerself $300. parts are only about a 100.
i'd almost come and do it fer that
