I'm going crazy . Electriicty does that to me. I am drawing from the battery. I have a 2n converted to 12 volt. I have a one wire self exciting alt. on it. The alternator goes to the bat. +. The bat + goes to the selinoid which goes to the + of the ammeter gauge. the - amemter goes to the third post of the resistor which then goes to the key switch. off the key switch come the juice to the post on the resistor thru the resistor to the coil. What is wrong?

I got an idea. Move the alternator off the bat over to the 3rd-post on the resistor block. That way, the alt has to run through the ammeter to get to the battery.
Way you got it, you can"t see any amps between the alternator and battery.

Sounds like you didn"t change the wires on your ammeter when you changed to neg ground. Swap the wires on the posts of the ammeter.

You should show a discharge while you crank the engine and a charge when you are running.

You can crank the engine for maybe 20 seconds with the ignition off, that will discharge the battery some. Wait a minute to two (let the starter cool) and start the engine. Then, the ammeter should show charge if it"s all working ok and the wires are on the correct ammeter posts.

Ernie..... ....that should work and yer ammeter will ONLY read yer ignition amps (about 3-amps). Ammeter don't care 6 or 12v, ammeter don't care positive or negative ground, but you semi-care. Traditionally, the ammeter is wired to show the charge/discharge amps into/outta the battery. So what is yer problem that is drivin' ya crazy?..... ...Dell
