Thank you to those who replied to my previous post on this subject. I have a couple more questions:
-My new oil pan gaskets go right up to the crankshaft and pulley shaft if installed as is. Should I trim these so the gasket ends will not be between the ends of the seals?
-My new oil seals each have one red end and one white end. Are they trying to tell me to install these in a particular way such as red ends touching, or red ends touching white?
-The rear seal wasn't leaking before, so I'm not replacing the rear upper seal. Any problem with putting a new rear lower half in?
Thanks again

Alan,
I"d trim the seals back so they"re about one sixteenth too long. On the color godes, used to be green went on top and red on the bottom. Some of the more experienced folks claim it doesn"t make a bit of difference. I"m with them. The rear upper gets very little wear so, no, there is no problem just replacing the lower. Are you aware there is a one piece neoprene front seal available?

Russ - Thanks for your reply. The trimming I was asking about is of the new pan gasket. Their present length puts their ends between the ends of the seals. Is that OK? Yes, I'm aware of the one piece seal and I even purchased one. I just can't decide whether to use it or not.

Don"t trim the seal. You need all of it to get the best seal. That spinning crank will pack that seal in there and if you trim it then you will end up with a gap at one end after some hours of operation. You tear down a few engines you"ll see the gap I"m talking about.
This link gives a great description of how to pack that seal in there and what to do with the gasket. I think I posted it before so maybe you aren"t interested but here it is again anyway.
