I would like to remove original kingpin, paint parts and reassemble. Saw in 8n manual to use crank after removing set bolt. 9n that I have looks slightly different. Set screw in top. Am I missing another one? Tried to pound with punch from backside(gently) and nothing moved? Any help would be appreciated.

Andy; I believe what's happening to yours is the same thing I experienced. Namely, the kingpin is so worn that there is a groove worn in it and that is what is hanging up on the axle bushing, whats left of it that is. Mine was so worn it had worn thru the bushing and had started wearing against the axle. Like one of the other posts said, take the axle off, and get a very big hammer and piece of pipe as a driver. Install a new bushing also. My $.02

"Gently" is not a word that I've EVER used in discribing how I got the king pin off of an "N" tractor. Did it twice, off of the tractor, from the rear & with a BIG hammer. Liquid Wrench & a socket like driver.

I pulled the axle assembly off the engine. Six bolts I think and then used a large socket, which just fit, to drive the king pin from backside after removing bolt from front. The hardest part was getting the king pin started. Flew out after that. I didn't have the crank to start with, but I have read on this site that others have had the same problem you have had and they drove it out from behind. ds

Andy, should be just the one cap screw. I was able to pull mine with the crank as shown in the picture, but you have to give it more than just a tap. Others have not been so lucky and have had quite a struggle getting them loose. A link below to a recent post and responses on the subject from the archives. Hope this helps.
