My 51 or 52 8N was starting and running fine until recently. When I tried to start all I got was a click I assume from the solenoid and every once in a while a humming noise, but the starter wouldn't engage. Anyone have any diagnosis? could it be my starter? I also found out recently (after I bought it) that my 8N has no oil filter any where to be found. why would someone plug up the place where it's supposed to be? Thanks for any advise.

Rangel..... ...in 1939, most automobile engines, the oilfilter was optional; and yer N-Ford tractor was STANDARD equipment. It is a "by-pass" system at the end of the oilline and only filters about 15% of the oil pumped. Modern automobile engines have "full-time" oil filter system where ALL the oil is filtered from the oilpump BEFORE it is routed thru the oil galleys to the crankshaft bearings.

Me? I'd gitta "spin-on" filter adaptor kit (JC Whitney has'em) $30, cheap. You'll need to make an adaptor bracket, but yer clever enuff to figger that out. New oillines, piece o'cake..... ....Dell

Dell, thanks for the history lesson. I was not aware of that and I'm certainly not smart enough to install spin on adapter system. What will happen if i just change the oil more often?

Rangel..... ...theres a good reason, N-Tractors have oilfilters. Tractorin' it dirty dusty hard work. Now iff'n yer 8N is a trailer queen that ya haul to tractor shows, ya could probably gitt-by with NO filter, buttcha probably gitt laughed right back-on the trailer.

Iff'n yer too un-clever to figger out how to make a bracket, then BE CLEVER and go BUY USED N-Oilfilter canister from a tractor junkyard that has the brackett already built-in. New pre-bent oil-lines are readily available..... ...respectfully, Dell

Sure you are smart enough.. you are on the internet..

What dell refers to is a universal kit. You will have to make a bracket.. preferably that will attach where the oem one did, and then you will need an oil source.. and an oil outlet. You know where the source is.. as you said it has been plugged. Depending ont he age of the engine, the oil outlet could be a couple places.. though the governor cup is a good spot if it is already setup for it.

Hows yer oil pressure gauge plumbed? still oem?

If you cleaned the cables and posts.. and the battery cables are the correct size.. and the battery is charged, start breaking it down a step at a time. First, see if it is the solenoid by bypassing it. MAKES SURE YOU ARE IN NEUTRAL ON THE TRANNY.. so ya don't run something over. N on tranny.. then jumper around the big bat/starter contacts onthe solenoid. if the starter spins up.. yer solenoid is bad. If not, double check your battery.. an easy way is to turn yer headlamps on if ya have them.. hit the starter.. i fthe lamps die.. your battery is insuficient. A volt meter will work fine. if the battery votlage drops from 6 to below 4 your battery is dead most likely... Another thing to check is to see if you can spin the motor over by hand. Your starter may be hung in the flywheel ring gear.

If not.. you'll have to loosen the 2 starter bolts ( don't pull them all the way out.. just about an inch or the starter will fall apart in your hands.. ) and then try/jiggle the starter free.

post back for more info if you need it, and to post your results.

My guess is dead battery.. or dirty contacts/poor wires.

Got any pics of that tractor with no oil line/filter canister?

soundguy sorry I have no pics yet. There is just a plug on the left side of engine where i believe the oil filter cansister would have been attached. I checked battery, cleaned posts, contacts on cables, etc. still nothing.
