I have seen mentioned on here a couple of times
about a reserve setting on a fuel valve.
Can someone tell me how to use this.
Always seems to run out of gas down at the river
at the other side of the property.
It would be real handy to just open a valve and
drive it back to the house.
Can ya'll tell me where the valve is and how to use it.
Frontmount 1949 8n 12volt.

Got an IT-FO4 manual today and didn't see
anything about this in there anywhere.

Thanks.

I bought one of those gas gauges available on ebay etc., only one problem you gotta get in the habit of looking at it once in a while, my tractor stopped, I opened the lid sure enough it was on "E".

I have a couple of pictures and you have to look real close at the top view to see...but i put a light in there so you can see the other hole. The main hole is through the center section that is raised off the bottom ot the tank about three inches. As you keep turning out the valve the second hole opens up and allows the remainder of the gas to flow through. HTH Tim

What Rob sez..... ..but don't be surprised if it doesn't work. Assuming you have the sediment bowl assembly that has the reserve feature, they often clog up & do not work. If you are the daring sort, you can remove it from the gas tank, clean it out & have a reserve. Two of my 3 N's have the OEM sediment bowl & neither one of them works. One of these days when I'm really bored, I might try to fix them.

The sediment bowl valve off the bottom of the gas tanks is two-position (three-position counting closed). Should say so on the round handle. Two-turns open for 9gals and full-open to get the reserve one-gallon and back to the barn.
If someone put a similar, "universal" Massey, Ford, etc after-market valve on there you have 8+gals with maybe a one-gal reserve and some gas you can"t get to at all.

Thanks. I haven't really looked at it.
I haven't been turning it off.
I will check it out tomorrow.
Will it be easy to tell if an aftermarket valve was added.

Thanks.

I believe the "universal" valves all have two ports for a fuel line. One, straight through and another off to one side like a Ford valve.
The universal valve won"t drain all the fuel but it does give you a reserve set-up (2-turns & full-open). It does not have a screen in the tank and has two tubes sticking into the tank. The Ford valve has a hole and one tube and an open-top screen in the tank to filter that bottom gallon reserve. If you want that hole open when you need it then let the tank go to reserve and open that valve full-open before you fill the tank.
If you keep topping the tank and never open the reserve then that hole gets plugged and you can"t get the last gallon out. When I change the oil I pull and clean the sediment bowl and quickly open the valve full open and then shut quick to drain any moisture off the bottom of the gas tank and that keeps everything open and clear.
