Looking to purchase older ford 9N.It is a three speed.Has the large brake drums as my other 9N. Are there serial numbers on the tranny or rear axle? Also, did ford put side mount dist. engines on a 9N. The serial number on the engine shows 9N ######. I'm guessing the engine is probably an 8N-1948 but the 9N in the engine serial number has me confused. Thanks!

Could one of you tractor doc's just answer da question? Don't need another serial# debate. AL wants to know if there are dates stamped on da tranny anywhere so's he can know when the back half(9n) of the tractor was made. I have the same problem-48 engine mated with a 9n.

I would look on the left rear axle trumpet. My 2N has the actual date cast into the trumpet along with the 2N part number. The 8N did not use 9N or 2N trumpets because the lift pin part is different. Still, if it's a 3 speed and has brakes on both sides of the tranny, your rear end is a 9N or a 2N. The hoods are also different. 8N hoods had a louvered door on the right side near the back for the optional air cleaner to bolt onto the side. However, they are interchangible. I still use the tranny/brakes as identifiers. Engine is the most commonly swapped out part.

Could be a Combine engine with the WIco mag (I have one and the mag has been converted to a distributor).

One possibility is that your old engine block was replaced with a new 8N type side mount block and the old serial number was transfered to the new block. Is it stamped straight with a "normal" font? If so it would not be an original number. Could you post a picture of your side mount distributor?

Two things come to mind.

One: if your 9N serial number is legit, i have heard of people adapting a side mount angled distributor drive onto the old frontmount engine timing covers.

Two: Are you sure you're not in fact running the ever-elusive 2N magneto setup? The magneto setup looks really weird and strange compared to your standard distributor, but i have seen it happen before.

NO 8N tractors ever had serial numbers that began with "9N-XXXXX "

If it was a 1948 8N engine, it would still be a front mount dist.

But he claims to have a side mount on a 9N serial number stamped block. If the 9N serial number is correct, it rules out an 8N engine all together.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think ALL 8Ns have serial numbers beginning with 9N? Well, at least the 4 cylinder ones. :-)

George,
Just you. All 2N serial numbers began with 9N. 8N serial numbers began with 8N. Then the "mix and match" began.

By golly you're right. I pushed the 9N numbers too far and should know better. Thank you.
