Low Oil Pressure

A few weeks ago i purchased a 1948 8n knowing it was in need of a little TLC. I was able to get it running after replacing the battery and starter relay, but the oil pressure was 0. The thought to be oil was mostly fuel so I drained the oil and oil filter canister. I also flushed the fuel tank, rebuilt the carb and replaced all 3 fuel screens. I restarted the tractor and the OP was 25psi using 10W30 oil. I drove the tractor around the yard, then changed the oil again to remove any remaining fuel, this time I used SAE30 oil. I desided to put the tractor to work turning my daughter"s dirtbike track using a two row cultivator. With a few tweeks to the main jet the tractor seemed to be running fine. After about 20 min the OP had dropped to 12 psi another 10 minutes the OP was 5psi at full throttle in first gear, at idle the OP was 0. I let the tractor set for 10 minutes when i restarted the tractor the OP was 15psi, but after 10 minutes the OP was 5psi. Would an overheat condition cause these symtoms? Or is an oil pump / bearing change my only hope? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had a 2n that had only 5-7 lbs of oil pressure and I ran 60w in it, had great pressure when cold and then like yours after ten or fifteen minutes it dropped, I rebuilt the engine and still had the same problem so the only conclusion was the camshaft, not long after someone offered to buy it a price I couldn't refuse even knowing about the oil pressure so it was sold and is still working out there every day. Keep the oil clean and as long as these engines have some oil pressure they will work for years to come.

First, check your oil to be sure it is still pure oil. Second, as the "N" series warmes up the oil pressure drops quite a bit. I would replace the oil gauge for the few bucks it costs. My 8N has run with about 5# pressure when hot for the last five years and is worked many times a week. It will still run for many years without any problems. Don't get hung up on oil pressure too much. You could rebuild it and still have low pressure due to bad cam bearings which cannot be replaced. So take your time and check for the obvious problems. Many will be suggested by others.

Uh, you do know that there are no bearings for the cam, right? The cam journal bearing surface rides directly in the block and there is nothing to replace except getting a new cam if it comes to that. It is rare that a cam will wear out on one of these machines and when it does, it's usually due to lobe wear and not bearing issues. The biggest cause for low OP is worn out main crankshaft bearings and con-rod bearings. The next is a worn out oil pump. Sounds to me like the pump is working.

To paraphrase you, "UH" do you know what Babbitt bearings are??? It is in the dictionary and the "N" series tractor for the cam. Just as ships at sea used it.

I wouldn't go heavier then SAE 40#. Stick with the straight weight oil.

Put in some heavier oil. 40-weight. You can live with 20psi cold and 5psi (or a little less even) hot idle. You wanna see 12psi at speed. You might go to 50-weight even.
Guys put a lot of hours on these Fords with crappy OP like that.
Of course, you run some added risk of a catastrophic engine failure that could add a couple, few hundred to the rebuild.
Seems you want it right though. It might be the oil pump. Pull the pan and check the bearings with plasti-gage, they may be ok.
You need the I&T FO-4 shop manual. Most any farm store or tractor dealer has I&T shop manuals.
