My 12 volt converted 1952 8n started right up this spring and ran strong for about half an hour, at which point it simply died as if the switch had been turned off. After checking for loose wires etc, I proceeded to begin checking for spark as outlined in several other posts I found in this forum. Looks as if it is overdue for general tune up parts, but I found one thing odd - When I test spark from the coil by holding the coil to distributor wire near the block, I get just one spark. After it sits for a couple of minutes, again, I get one spark, no more. Shouldn"t I get a spark every time the points close? Does this indicate a faulty coil or some other issue in the ignition system?

Andy..... ....yer 1-sparkie every couple minutes is usually a BAD CONDENSER. Replace both the condenser and the points. Simple, eh?..... ...Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

I had voltage to coil but nothing out changed coil still the samle happening to me discovered that the brand new switch had to be turned just a hair back towards off from straight up and down. Took me a long time to find this one.

You had trouble with a switch. I"m curious because I"ve been ok with switches but I always install a keyed switch or lock with the pins on top. That means the jagged side of the key is on top. I don"t know that matters anyway to these ignition switches but I was told that"s the way you do it. Don"t know why other than you know in the dark how to insert the key. Maybe it matters other wise. I can see it"s clearly different to have the lock pins on the bottom especially if a guy has a key ring on there.
Maybe nothing but is your troublesome switch install with the pins on top?

Rob

It's installed the only way it goes in. It's a slotted keyed hole on my 52 side mount 6V so it would only go in one way. It was a really strange problem that I found by accident once I took a OHM meter to every wire on the tractor and they all checked out good when I just happened to think to hook it up to the switch wires going to the terminal block and turn the key on. Shure enough had continunity at about 11 o:clock. AT 12 o:clock lost it nothin. Turned to to 11 pushed the button and VAROOOM off she went.

I don"t know what you have then.

My 8N is off at 12, on at 3.

Could be bad coil.. could be bad points.. could be bad ignition switch.. I'd also look closely at the condensor.

For a quik test.. bypass the ignition switch, rule that out first.. try spark test next, if you have a points hone / ignition file.. give a quick pass on the points.. or drag some stiff brown paper bag thru them briskly a few times. try spark test again. if you have a spare coil.. wire it up, again as a test.

You should be able to determine what component is failing. might be a 15$ coil.. or a 5$ points/condensor set.. or 10$ ignition switch..
etc.

If you do replace the coil.. and it is an old 6v ome and you are using a resistor.. get rid of both of them and just use a real 12v coil.. like a napa IC14SB
