I'm thinking of changing my 8N back to 6volt system and I have alot 6 Volt parts avalible but would rather have one that sombody took off of their tractor so it would be complete or close to it.
If anybody has this I would be interested in it.
My tractor is a 1948 8N I don't care what year it comes off of as long as it has the same parts mine would have had. Thanks

Rough,

Way to go!!! If I had all the old parts from the previous owner, I would have changed it back. I didn't so I had to move on. I now have it running great on 12 volts, but it doesn't look right. I did everything I could, paint the alternator, clean up the wires..... It looks ok, but not original.

They wouldn't be to suprised. They already call him Pretty Boy at work because he dresses like a Gigalo and never gets dirty. She was a little hot but she knows I'll find another. We never was supposed to keep it when we bought it. We were going to re sale it. But Randy and I own half of so much stuff one of us end up keeping most of it anyway.

Roughstock..... ....what are you thinking????

Unless you are creating a trailer queen for jurried concours competition, leave it 12v.

There is NO PARTS advantage to retro-grade refitting yer current 12v conversion. I can't advise you why it was originally converted to 12v but I can sure an' tell you yer opening up a can of worms to back-convert.

And even iff'n you think yer having problems with yer 12v conversion and that by changing back to 6v you'll gitt ridd of the problem, THINK AGAIN!!!! You'll STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS ONLY WORSE.

DON'T DO-ITT!!!..... ..respectfully, Dell a 12v advocate for the right reason.

That said, I haven't found the right reason for my eazy starting 6v 8N, and I know how to do it right, the FIRST TIME. Infact, I know 8-ways to do it and they all work.

Dell, I am still curious to know the eight different ways of converting to twelve volts. As often as you mention it, I think you should share!

dbwillia..... ....sorry, I won't share my 8-ways to convert to 12v in open forum. There are TOO MANY electrically challenged tractor neubies that don't understand electricity that read this great N-Board. Iff'n yer a qualified electrical tech, then I'll be happy to share by private e-mail..... ..respectfully, Dell, 12v advocate for the right reason and 40yrs Electrical Engr

I changed on back for the neighbor once - he did not like the looks of the cobbled up conversion, and neither did I. Never has had a problem with starting it, and it sure does look better. And by the way Dell, some of us do know how to do it right.

Tom..... ..good for you knowing how to convert to 12v. So many tractor neubies are electrically challenged and thats is virtually all we hear on this great N-Board. Why doesn't my 12v conversion work? 'cuz ol'BillyBob down at the local spittin-n-whittlin' waterin'hole sez "its tha' thang too doo; yep, thang ta doo" as he takes 'nutter swig o'barley-pops..... ....respectfully, Dell, a 12v advocate that knows 8-ways to do it right the 1st-time

Dell I know I am opening a can of worms but hopefully it will all work out. No I dont have one single problem with the 12 volt system but I just like the way it looks when its all original and running good. Thanks for trying to save me from myself though I appreciate the input.

My 2N had been converted to 12V sometime in the past. Even though it was running when I took over ownership, i hated the alternator. My biggest beef with it was the fact that someone (possibly my grandfather whom i loved dearly), rigged up a terrible tensioner bracket for the alternator and had to cut out a nice 8" long portion of the trim along the side of the hood to make room for everything. For that very reason, i despise alternator conversions on tractors to this day. That, and for the reason mentioned earlier. If it was designed to take certain parts, those are the parts I want on my tractor...no extra, none missing. "Clean, bright, tight"...and workin right! Never have cared much for "bandaid" fixes.

Jeb

I agree. I did the same thing with my 2N and couldn't be happier. I know exactly how to wire it up and how to easily trace out electrical problems without worrying about which of the 8 different correct ways the 12V version could have been done. Guess what? It starts like a dream!

As for parts, if you've got a good generator, bracket, you're more than halfway there. Then all you will need is the correct 6V regulator and coil and that's it!

Jeb, who beleives in 6V originality because that's what it was designed for.

Thanks for the info. Thats exacly how I am MR. ORIGINALITY. I belive if it came that way it should stay that way. I see people change auto's with $100.00 dollars worth of parts and a torch When the Auto makers have spent Millions desighning it.
