I am in the market for an 8n but haave run across several different versions. I need to know which is better for;
Power
reliability
parts availability
maintenance

Thanks for the help and will make a purchase in 2 weeks or so. If you have a good tip on a N series in West Ky drop me an email. I don't mind driving a couple of hours either.

Well, Is probably too late but, there is a 8N suppose to be in good shape going to auction this morning here in Winchester. Will not be able to go to that auction as I have some things sell at an other one.

It's possible you've seen some late Funk conversions in an 8N. Some later ones did use OHV engines as opposed to flatheads.

Jeb made good points but I don"t know about parts. You know what you have for the OHV engine I suppose you can get parts.
As for the advantages of the OHV, I"m under the impression that the engine will last longer because of the improved valve train. Should be a higher RPM engine, because of the improved valve train, resulting in more torque and HP per pound. I believe it"s less likely to burn valve seats so more durable and more hours between valve jobs. The flatheads have a weak valve seat placement that results in a lot of cracked blocks across the intake valve seat (a big ol" hole in the block) to the cylinder wall which is located only a fraction of an inch away. Those cracks were eliminated with the overhead geometry. That and the exhaust and exhaust don"t have to be pushed and pulled through so many extreme changes of directions in the newer design.
So there you have it generally from a guy who knows next to nothing about the particular OHV engine you are shopping. My 2-cents for what that"s worth....

The 8N was only made with a flathead 4 cylinder engine. If you have run across one that had an OHV engine, double check to see if it isn't really a ferguson. If it does have an OHV engine and is indeed an 8N, then you have a conversion.

As for parts availability, the stock flathead engine is by far the easier to get parts for. Everything else (short of being a ferguson) you have to search down which vehicles of that era used that engine and look up parts that way which sometimes runs you down a dead end road. I'm just a big fan of the flatheads just because they're so darned simple and we have several dedicated parts supliers for just that very engine.
