I searched the archives until I was going blind and still couldn't find the answer. I can't figure out how to put the new clutch type starter drive on the 8N starter. I've taken off and on the old bendix type several times by compressing the spring and pushing the pin out. With this new style drive it seems there is nothing that will compress at the end with the rubber washer. I put the starter drive in a vise and pushed from the gear on one end and the rubber washer on the other end. Nothing on the end with the rubber washer would move to expose the hole to inset the pin. I cranked the vise down pretty good, much harder than I could have pushed it by hand or by leaning on it. The drive is in the extended position (that’s another story) and I’m not sure if that has anything to do with not being able to expose the hole to put the pin in. If I can get the drive on the starter I’m going to leave it extended and let the first start up make it retract. My bell housing is already egged out to give it room for the starter installation. What’s the secret to this dang thing? There must be something simple I’m just not seeing. Thanks for any input you may have.

Rick, I have taken the pin on several ones that I have replaced and ground a small flat spot on one end to just give me a slight angle then tapped it in with a hammer, two minute job.

What Bob061 says about a c-clamp or if you have a C type welders vise grip that'll work too. Steve

Rick, when I did mine I had the same trouble. I used a C clamp between the washer and the splined body just on one side to make the washer tilt and that was enough to get the pin in.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't have a C clamp big enough so I put it in the vise and pushed from one side to cause it to tip as you described. I just hope I remember this in case I ever need to remove that drive. I like posting pictures so others can see exactly what is being discussed. You know what they say about a picture and 1000 words. Thanks again.

Yikes! Putting that in a vise can't be good for it.

A couple of taps with a hammer and a drift is all it has take me to install a starter bendix like the one pictured. Hold the pin with some pliers and rap it quickly and sharply to start it. Yes, it looks like it won't fit. It does fit with a wee bit of force. Place something under the starter shaft to absorb the shock. Bent starter shafts will make your bendix installation irrelevant -- they will explode after time.

I hear you on the bent starter shaft but the pressure from the vise isn’t very much at all. It is only cocking the one part of the starter drive, nothing else. The hole down the center of the starter drive is totally unaffected and I don’t think there will be a problem, but I’ll pay close attention as I go just to make sure I don’t mess it up. The vise is just being used just as the other folks had described using a big C clamp. Thanks for the tip. I appreciate the input.
