What is the best way to check a firing problem. Cannot get my tractor to fire. What wiring do I need to check?
Help Please!

I would suspect the points before the coil. Looking at the points really can't tell you much unless they are obviously really burned up or closed up etc.

The first thing you should do is to see if in fact the points are the culprit. Remove the distributor cap and then remove the center wire from the distributor cap. This is the one coming out of the coil. Turn the engine over and see if the points are breaking. If they are and don't need to be re-gapped then you should proceed to the checking of the points by using an insulated screwdriver to make contact between the two parts of the points. It is not necessary to touch the points themselves at the contact point but anywhere back of the contacts that is not insulated. Just make a connection between the two parts of the points. Hold the end of the high tension wire that is coming out of the coil about a quarter inch from any metal part of the engine and see if when you touch and then remove the screwdriver from the points you get a spark at the end of the wire. If you do then the problem is with the points. Anything that gets onto the contact points of the points can cause them to cease to work. Just touching the points can cause oils from your skin to insulate them enough to prevent them working. Any oxidation on them can do the same. So can any oil of any kind on the contacts.

Also be sure that the insulator that is in the base of the distributor where the screw goes through is not shorting out to the base of the distributor. This will kill any electrical current that is trying to make it to the points.

What Dell says and if you can't get any fire at all out of her, my first guess is your ignition switch is bad. Will the starter turn it over? You can rule out the switch by jumping across it at the terminal block. Seems like all the problems I've ever had in starting with my Jubilee has been worn, or pitted points, except one time when a relatively new ignition switch failed. Be sure your points are good and gapped to .025".

Ron..... ....the best way to check a firing problem is with a calibrated sparkie tester.

Make a calibrated sparkies tester outta ennyold sparkplug and bend the side electrode out for a FULL 3/16" gap. Now clamp the sparkie shell to enny convient engine grounding brackett so'n you can see-itt!!! Now PLUG enny convient sparkie wire to the top of yer calibrated sparkie tester. NOW CRANK yer engine and watch yer calibrated sparkie tester. Does yer sparkie sparkle with blue-snott authority? or is it a wimpy yellow/orangeish excuse of a spark?

And go from there..... .....respectfully, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister
